Eccentric Bridal Gallery - Crazy Designer Wedding Dresses

By

I usually admire people who think outside the box. It's great to be creative. But how far should we go with fashion? Should we follow the Fashion Muse all the way over the top? Or should we try to keep a balance between creativity and common sense a little bit when it comes to bridal designs?

Givenchy's Wedding Dress
Givenchy's Wedding Dress

"Swollen-Tailed Mermaid" by Givenchy

I am a big fan of Givenchy, but after seeing this wedding dress, my loyalty to them has shaken quite a bit. Imagine how distracting this gown would be at the altar. Some guests might be questioning, "How come the bride is wearing a swim cap?" or "Why does she use her car's air bag as her dress train?"

I understand that Riccardo Tisci, the current Givenchy's chief designer, is obsessively fascinated with the gothic fad and space-age minimalism, which praises simplicity of design. This ghastly wedding dress, nonetheless, epitomizes neither the goth culture nor the minimalistic trend. But rather, it just minimizes the bride's beauty.

Reem Acra's Wedding Dress
Reem Acra's Wedding Dress

"Delusional Housewife" by Reem Acra

Since when is draping a bright yellow apron around your wedding gown considered "high fashion"? And what's that on her head? Is it just my insane imagination or is she really using a rag doll as a hair ornament?

The woman in this picture by no mean looks like a jubilant bride, but a desperate housewife who has lost her mind while making stew in the kitchen, so she puts on her old wedding dress, wraps an apron around her waist and ties her kid's toy to her neck, dreaming of the carefree days when she used to be single and wishing she had never gotten married. Maybe Reem Acra designed this wedding dress to warn all the bride-to-bes that this could be their possible future.

Yves Saint Laurent's Wedding Dress
Yves Saint Laurent's Wedding Dress

"The Queen" by Yves Saint Laurent

This retro-fashion bridal gown reminds me of no earthly bride but Dame Judi Dench in Shakespeare in Love. Yves Saint Laurent wedding dresses are usually famous for their glamorous and refined elegance, but this one is far beyond that. The word "graceful" is yet inadequate to describe it. This lustrous silvery gown is so majestic and queenly that no typical bride deserves to wear it in her wedding.

The only three good reasons to wear this dress would be: First, you work at Disneyland; second, you are older than sixty; and third, it's Halloween.

Balmain's Wedding Dress
Balmain's Wedding Dress

"Poccupine Bride" by Balmain

The groom needs not to worry; no one would dare touch his bride. She has her prickly dress as her shield. In this wedding dress, she would remain safe and untouched. And is that long disheveled cloth on her head supposed to be a veil? Or are there just so many insects at the wedding that she needs to shroud herself in a mosquito net?

I spent quite some time contemplating the idea behind this wedding dress and finally realized that it's really sublime. The rough, thorny, fuzzy gown is a perfect epitome of the typical married life itself. Quite a subtle way to prepare those dreamy and overly optimistic brides for stark reality.

Jean Paul Gaultier's Wedding Dress
Jean Paul Gaultier's Wedding Dress

"Warrior Bride" by Jean Paul Gaultier

Balmain's bride has only prickles, but this one literally has a shield. It is as though getting married is like going to war. Who knows? Behind that shield, she might be holding a dagger.

This bridal dress by Jean Paul Gaultier proves that once you are a famous designer, no matter how aberrant or absurd your ideas are, there will always be room for you on high-fashion runways.

wow! these are insane. I don't know who would actually wear these to their wedding. I am gonna stick with the classic white gown.

Tayler!

Om Paramapoonya 3 years ago

Hi Taylor, thanks for stopping by. Yeah, they're really insane, especially the last one.

funnebone 3 years ago

Om..when you and I marry which dress do you want me to wear? and can tater be my best man?

Om Paramapoonya 3 years ago

Did you just propose to me on Hubpages?!!!! How am I supposed to tell our kids? Daddy proposed to Mommy online? I'm sorry funnebone. I can't marry you. I'm already engaged to Michael Strahan of the NY Giants.

funnebone 3 years ago

You know what..he is my favorite athlete! Did you see him dressed up as Dog the Bounty hunter on halloween?

( he is married, you vixen)

Om Paramapoonya 3 years ago

No, I didn't see him dressed up as dog the bounty hunter. He must have looked hilarious. Did you hear that he's retiring? Bummer. I'll miss him so much.

Oh, and FYI, he just got divorced last year. I've heard that he's dating Eddie Murphy's ex-wife. If he chooses her over me, then I guess I'll accept your proposal. And I'll allow tater to be your best man.

That Warrior Bride dress is beyond freaky. The rest are downright funny. Especially the housewife one with the doll on her head. I guess fashion designers are smoking a little too much stuff in the drawing room. Thanks for sharing these funny wedding dresses. I have a friend getting married in September. She'll get a great laugh too!

Om Paramapoonya 3 years ago

Good morning, Steph. Thanks for stopping by. I guess they're really smoking too much stuff like you said. But I kind of want whatever they're smoking. ;-)

JUne 3 years ago

Ommy I love the idea but if I got a chance to wear the wedding dress, I prefer the classic one :) Miss you. When will you come back?

Om Paramapoonya 3 years ago

Hey, June!!! Why would you wear a plain classic wedding dress? I think Alex would probably want you to wear something more fancy. The second one (delusional housewife) will look good on you. Just kidding. :-)

I'll go visit you and everyone in Dec. Miss you, too. :-)

Reminds me some of the dresses Carrie tried on for the Sex and the City movie. Interesting hub.

Om Paramapoonya 3 years ago

You mean when Miranda and Carrie went into a lame bridal shop and tried on ugly wedding dresses for fun, and then Carrie just freaked out? That was a funny episode. :-)

SweetiePie 3 years ago

That was one, but I was also thinking of some of the gowns Carrie tried on for her own wedding. I liked the final selection, but the blue feather was really over the top.

Om Paramapoonya 3 years ago

Oh, you were talking about the movie. I see. Sorry. Somehow I was thinking about the series. :-)

SweetiePie 3 years ago

Well it could apply to both, I just had not thought about it until you mentioned it :).

I enjoyed looking at all of those. High fashion is more like fine art, not just for wedding dresses but in lots of fashion shows. The stuff people actually wear is usually a tamed down version of the runway stuff, you are supposed to get a real feel for their expression in the runway exibits and then take that as inspiration to buy from the designer.

That white cap in the first one is weird looking, but that dress looks very feathery and billowy like a dove and the cap makes her head look like a dove's. I think that might be what they were going for.

And stuff like the warrior theme is just a designer's expression to get buyers excited about their vision and to entertain. People want to be intertained at these shows.

Thanks for posting those, I enjoyed looking at them.

Om Paramapoonya 3 years ago

Thanks for your comments, funnynotslutty. Your analysis on fashion is really profound, unlike mine. I don't know much about fashion, really. I just wrote this hub when I was in the silliest mood.

Woody Marx 3 years ago

Actually I find them all rather timid...;)

Om Paramapoonya 3 years ago

timid? Now i'm interested in seeing your wedding photos! :)

Is the swallowed tail mermaid dress for the mummy's bride!!!!

Om Paramapoonya 23 months ago

LOL that's funny :D

PaperNotes 20 months ago

OMG, the wedding dresses are all brilliant, but I think if I will get married again, I still want a simple dress. If I will be paid thousand dollars just to wear any of those gowns, then I will wear it without complains, lol! Thanks, there are actually many other strange wedding gowns I've seen before and some brides really make a statement by wearing them on their wedding day.

Dolores Monet 11 months ago

Hi, Om - this was so funny. As notslutty up there pointed out, fashion shows are for extreme art, but why the heck not be extreme for a wedding? I mean, face it, most brides all look alike - pretty lady, expensive white dress. I've been to my share of weddings this year and my fave was the bride who wore purple. Lots of us scoffed before the wedding, but when she walked up the isle in her purple dress (hand made by her grandmother) - the wedding was in an old Gothic mansion, once a museum - she looked perfect.

I enjoyed your descriptions of the dresses - you have such a way with words!

Om Paramapoonya 11 months ago

Purple wedding dress and Gothic mansion? Man, that is just too cool! =D

sarah 7 months ago

my cousin really wants to get married in a givenchy dress ( the one florence wore to be exact) does anyone know how that can happen? or any great dress makers who can copy the design? any helpful tips would be really appreciated

kschimmel 4 months ago

I think porcupines are cute--the porcupine dress, though...well, I have seen worse. Can you believe somebody somewhere probably paid to wear the warrior dress?

Om Paramapoonya 4 months ago

Yeah, the "porcupine" dress is probably the least eccentric one among all these. I'm sure all these dresses have been sold and worn for real. Some brides like to be extremely unique! :)
