How to Feng Shui the Bedroom - Colors and Object Placement

94

By Om Paramapoonya

Ask yourself whether you feel that your bedroom is a peaceful sanctuary, your favorite spot of retreat and a wonderful love nest or not. If the answer is no, maybe there is something wrong with your bedroom feng shui. A simple rearrangement of furniture and a little tweak in the color theme may be able to enliven your bedroom quite a bit.

Feng shui (pronounced fung-shway) literally means "wind and water." It is an ancient Chinese art of space arrangement, object placement and decoration. In feng shui practice, everything is categorized into either yin or yang. Yin conveys slowness, relaxation, passivity, coldness, gentleness and tranquility. Yang, on the other hand, stands for rapidity, excitement, vigor, heat, hardness and restlessness. The fundamental idea of feng shui is to arrange things in a way that keeps yin and yang in good balance so that the "life force or spiritual energy" called "chi" can flow through all objects in your home freely.

This notion applies to bedroom feng shui as much as the rest of your home. A good bedroom feng shui should depict a sense of comfort and safety, create a romantic atmosphere for lovers, and invigorate sleepers for a new day. According to all feng shui gurus, if you keep everything in good balance and allow chi to flow freely, longevity, contentment, success and prosperity will also come. Everything that surrounds us, so to speak, affects our life.

Feng Shui Compass

On a higher level, feng shui can get quite complicated. If you hire a professional feng shui consultant to help decorate your bedroom, a lot of things will be called into consideration. For example, in which direction your bedroom faces, in what year your home was constructed, your birthdate, your partner's birthdate, other buildings surrounding your home, etc. But of course, not all of us can afford to hire a feng shui consultant. So we will just have to do it ourselves! And the good news is it's not that difficult. Here you will learn some basic feng shui precepts, applicable to all types of bedroom.

Colors

In feng shui, colors are divided into two groups. Yin colors are supposed to soothe your soul and help you relax whereas yang colors tend to motivate and excite you. As a bedroom is a place for retreat, yin colors should be dominant. Having too much yang will stir up too much tension and stop you from relaxing. However, your bedroom should not completely lack the yang energy, for having too much yin can cause languidness and the lack of motivation.

Yang Colors

  • Red
  • Purple
  • Yellow
  • White
  • Gold/Orange

Yin Colors

  • Pink
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Gray
  • Black

Color Feng Shui for Good Health and Longevity

Green and blue are said to be the colors that can enhance our health. Feng shui practitioners believe that the color green symbolizes longevity, growth and rebirth while the color blue represents calmness, flexibility and inner peace. To paint your bedroom walls green or to use it as the theme color is like bringing nature into your room. It can revitalize those who have been ill and be the soul tonic to those who are already healthy. Similarly, decorating your bedroom with the color blue is believed to be good for relaxation and meditation. When your mind becomes more refreshed, your body will do the same.

Color Feng Shui for Wealth and Career

Red, purple and gold, according to feng shui masters, can induce good luck and prosperity. However, they are yang colors, therefore you should not use too much of these shades in your bedroom where you are supposed to rest and relax. Use them as accent colors, instead.

Black, white and gray are the colors that can improve luck in your career. Black symbolizes good income and insightfulness. White represents creativity and mental strength. And gray is said to create the sense of self-empowerment and confidence. Keep in mind that even though black is a yin color, it tends to absorb negative chi when you use too much of it to decorate your home.

Color Feng Shui for Romance and Relationship

The best colors for enhancing your love life are pink, yellow and orange. Feng shui practitioners believe that pink can create positive energy for all couples both in terms of sexual fulfillment and selfless love. Yellow can induce acceptance and tolerance, though using too much yellow to decorate your bedroom may create anxiety. Orange, the vibrant blend of red and yellow, can lend passion and undertstanding to you and your partner.

Feng Shui and Sleep Directions

Bed Positioning: Dos and Don'ts

Feng Shui Bed Positioning
Feng Shui Bed Positioning

Dos

  • Shun away from the door - Place your bed as far away from the bedroom door as possible. (See the above picture.) The ideal corner for the bed is the one diagonally opposite to the door. Most feng shui masters say that this position can help you gain a sense of relaxation and safety while resting. Also, it's the position where you can benefit most from the chi that flows through your bedroom.
  • Get solid support - The head of your bed should be placed against a wall or have a solid headboard. Feng shui practioners believe that this symbolic support will give you calmness and strength to handle difficulties in life.
  • Create a symbolic scope - Create a wide space in front of your bed. The bed position should allow you to have a perfect scope of vision of the whole room. A limited range of sight within the room can block the flowing chi and diminish your life's vision. The wider the space in front of your bed, the more broadly your perception of life expands and improves. Being able to see the entrance to your bedroom also symbolizes that you are in command of your own life and feel confident to face whatever life is bringing.

Don'ts

  • The Death Position - Don't position your bed in line with the door. (See the above picture.) In other words, your feet should not point directly to the door while sleeping. This bed position, according to feng shui practitioners, is the "Death Position," as in Chinese culture the deceased is carried out feet first. It is a feng shui no-no. By having your bed face the door directly, you will be too exposed to excessive chi, which accordingly will bring too much energy, stress, negative influences and health problems.
  • Stagnation from the foot - Avoid placing the foot of your bed against a wall. A footboard, in feng shui, is also considered "a chi blocker." It is said to cause stagnation and obstruct progress in your career.
  • Overhead gadgets can create restlessness - Don't position your bed right under a ceiling fan, overhead beam, skylight or the low side of a slanted ceiling. These features, feng shui gurus claim, if placed directly above the bed will create a lot of depressing energy that can cause restlessness while you sleep.
  • Don't throw the chi out the window - Avoid placing the head of your bed right under a window. Unlike a wall, a window does not provide the sense of safety and support. It can cause a fitful sleep and drain away your chi throughout the night, making you feel exhausted in the morning despite just having had a long night of sleep.
  • Don't lose the chi from down under - Avoid putting the mattress on the floor. Sleeping directly on the floor, in feng shui practice, is not recommended. As I have mentioned, feng shui is all about keeping the chi flowing freely between objects in your bedroom. The gap between your mattress and the floor, therefore, will allow the chi to circulate below you.

Feng Shui Tips: How to choose a bed

Object Placement

  • Ward off yang energy - Do not keep your television, computer or exercise equipment in your bedroom. These things can create an overflow of yang energy, which keeps you awake and agitated at night. In feng shui practice, a bedroom is supposed to be the place for quietness, peace and intimacy. So keep away all the electronic devices that may interrupt your peacefulness. Try to shut off the stresses of the day when you step into your bedroom. If you feel like you really want to have a computer or T.V. in your bedroom, you should place a folding screen between your bed and the computer desk or T.V. stand. Hanging a beautiful fabric from the ceiling is another nice way to separate your relax space from the entertainment or work area.
  • Two for two - If you want to improve your romance luck, you should put nightstands on both sides of your bed. Use them as your shrines of love. Accessorize them with things that come in a pair. For example, a pair of candles, mandarin ducks or little vases of fresh flowers. Having two or three books on your nightstands is all right, but don't overload them with piles of books or thick files you bring back from work. These things can ruin your mood for intimacy.
  • Open your eyes to a sight of inspiration - Hang your favorite piece of art on the wall opposite your bed so that it will be the last thing you see before you go to sleep and the first thing you perceive after you wake up. Try to choose an art piece that inspires you or represents your goal in terms of success, love life or spirituality.
  • Avoid reflections of problems - Don't place a mirror near or opposite the bed. It is believed to reflect all your concerns and worries, bounce around too much energy and accordingly keep you awake at night. Some feng shui masters even say that positioning a mirror opposite your bed will invite an unwanted third party into your relationship. If you don't want to remove a mirror from your bedroom, try to cover it with a light fabric when it is not used.
  • Green corner - From a feng shui perspective, plants are associated with growth, progess and rebirth. Placing a little plant in a corner of your bedroom, therefore, is believed to prevent the chi from stagnation.
  • Space under the bed - Don't store anything under your bed because that will block the flow of chi. You should always keep it clear and clean. Your life can get pretty messy if under you bed, there is another bed of dust balls.
  • Erase bad memories - Fung shui practitioners believe that every object obsorbs positive and negative energy from our past. Therefore you should get rid of things that are associated with bad memories or at least do not keep them in your bedroom, the place where you are supposed to leave all your worries behind. When it comes to a mattress, every feng shui guru will tell you the same thing: you should never buy a used one. You would never know to whom it belonged or whether somebody died in it. In fact, you should buy a new mattress every few years and give it a few good hours of sunshine every few months.

Very good info, as I'm trying to think of how to redecorate my tiny bedroom. I love the color green, which is what I was planning to paint...But, I have a question, what is your opinion about putting the bed diagonally in the corner opposite the door?? Is it ok as long as there is a headboard??

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 years ago

Pam, as long as the foot of your bed does not point directly to the door, it is ok. And since you will position your bed diagonally in the corner, the head of your bed will not be directly against the wall and therefore you will need a headboard in order to create the symbolic support.

Thanks for dropping by. If you have more questions, please feel free to ask :-)

Hi just found this hub. Thanks for the great advice. One question -my bedroom is on the upper floor of an older house (100) and the walls follow the roofline so two walls are slanted above the four foot mark. The only place to put a bed is against one of those walls. The doorway falls on the side of the bed near the foot area so it faces across which is not too bad. The headboard faces North which I understand is good. My concern is that from just above the headboard the roof slants up which I think think would mean that energy could flow down the roof line onto the bed? Is there any remedy for that? I did have a dream catcher hanging on the ceiling above the bed where the slant began would that be a good thing or not? I am not a good sleeper so am looking for any help I can get. Thanks

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 years ago

Irishwoman, thanks for visiting my hub. A slanted ceiling can create too much chi and make you have a restless sleep. Try hanging a bamboo flute above your headboard. It is supposed to create peace and restfulness. :)

Great tips. I believe in Feng Shui but too lazy to remember complicated rules. One time I actually followed a TV program and moved my bed to a different spot of my bedroom then my husband got a terrible nightmare the night. I then switched the sleeping place with his and I got a nightmare next night, too. It is a big deal and need to be very careful if you are moving your bed to a different spot of the room. I guess the general foamular of Feng Shui somehow doesn't exactly work for everyone due to "people" are one of the factor that affects the result.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 years ago

yxhuang, thanks for stopping by :) These tips are just basic ideas of how to keep things in good balance and let chi flow freely. But you're right that if we want to dig deeper into the art of feng shui, a number of other factors including the home dwellers themselves will also have to be called into consideration.

Hi. Our marital bed 's footboard is agains the wall that has a window(with window blinds), and the headboard is not against the wall. Also the bed is accessible to one side only. And 2 meters from the headboard there is a big vintage mirror hanging on the wall. I know it's bad feng shui. But it is so impossible to rearrange the bed. If I do rearrange it, then the head board would be against the wall which divides the bedroom and the bathroom. Do you have any suggestions on what fengshui cures I could make? Thanks

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 years ago

Hi pinay rn, if your bed has a headboard, it doesn't need to be against a wall. And it's also ok to have your bed's footboard beneath a window. However, is it possible to move your bed slightly so it will be accessible from both sides? Also, I suggest that you remove the mirror from the bedroom. :)

pinay rn 3 years ago

Hi. I don't think it is possible to move the bed, not even slightly, to make it accessible to both sides...Is there any thing ( a charm ) to treat or cure that? With regards to the mirror, I am considering your suggestion to remove the mirror...But I have read in one site that a a mirror in the bedroom should be covered with fabric at night so it will not cause any negative effect on us. What is your opinion about that? Thanks again.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 years ago

pinay rn, a bed that is accessible from only one side is not an ideal, but it's not such bad feng shui, either. So you don't have to worry about the bed too much. And yes, covering the mirror with a fabric can help. But besides reflecting too much yang energy, a mirror is also believed to be an unlucky object for a marriage, so it shouldn't face or be close to a marital bed at all.

pinay rn 3 years ago

Thanks for your advice. I will now secure a fabric to cover the mirror at night. Thanks :)

Hi lvpinoyboy, a tree near the entrance is not necessarily considered bad feng shui. But if the branches of the tree point to the entrance like "shars" or poison arrows, then that's a bad feng shui. You may hang a bagua mirror somewhere near the entrance to reflect the shars and bad fortune back :)

Thank you sooo much for the tips!! I have another question if I may. I'm not sure I fully understand the whole Element circle when it comes to decorating. I understand the philosophy of it but am afraid that when I decorate I will be setting up a bad cycle. How do I know if there is too much of one thing or does it matter what part of the room I put each element? For instance, My livingroom consist of a lot of Water, Metal, and Wood. Is this bad?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 years ago

lvpinoyboy, the idea is to keep everything in good balance. It also depends how you want to use the room. For example, the bedroom should have more yin elements than yang because you want it to be the place where you can rest and relax. The study room or home office, on the other hand, should have a lot of yang elements to energize you. :)

...I thought of one more question(this is my last one, I promise!!) I only bought one nightstand with my bedroom set, which has been discontinued, so buying another one is not an option. What can I do to create a sense of balance on the side of the bed without the nightstand?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 2 years ago

fengcurious, thanks for your questions. Here are my answers:

- A bed with a footboard is not an ideal. What you should do to allow chi to flow more freely is that you can place the head of your bed against a wall, and make sure there is plenty of space on both sides and at the foot of the bed. Also, always keep the floor under your bed clean. Do not store anything under there.

- As for the second question, you don't have to worry about that at all. As long as your feet dont point directly to the door, it's ok.

- And lastly, having only one nightstand is also okay. If you want to improve your romance luck, just decorate your nightstand with knickknacks that come in a pair. You don't have to buy everything in a pair in order to create a sense of balance. To keep everything in good balance, you just have to make sure the room does not look too crowded on one side and too empty on the other, and make sure you use a good combination of yin and yang colors to decorate the room.

Hi Clare, hanging your favorite pictures or art pieces over or near your bed can be very inspirational. Hanging a mobile directly above the bed, however, may create too much chi. You can keep it in the bedroom, but don't hang it too close to the bed.

Having pictures of water and beaches on your wallpaper may create too much yin energy, making you lethargic and taking passion away. So try to decorate the room with yang colors to balance that.

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 2 years ago

Hi Crystal, you can put the head of your bed toward the bedroom door. Not being able to see the door isn't an ideal, but not considered as bad as having your feet pointing directly to the door. Or if possible, try turning your bed a bit diagonally, so that your feet will point to a wall or a corner of the room instead.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 2 years ago

Jen, just always keep the area around your bed neat. If you don't have any space under the bed for the chi to flow, you could make up for it by having plenty of space on both sides instead, meaning the sides of your bed should not be against a wall or too close to big furniture.

Hi NevaehsMommy, I believe the Buddha statue you have might actually be holding the gold ingots, not bowls. You can use the statue to enhance your wealth luck by placing it in the dining room or kitchen (where your financial luck is). Since you said your bedroom isn't big, maybe there're not many ways you can rearrange the furniture. To make the chi flow more freely, you can hang up a crystal ball, place a little plant or vase of fresh flowers near your bed, and make sure you always let plenty of light enter the room during the day.

Hi. I would just like to inquire about fengshui in bedroom. I wanted to know if you know any good luck charms that can be used as fengshui to increase fertility chance of married couple that can be display inside the bedroom or any part of the house?

Any ideas is highly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Hi Janelle, lucky objects for couples who want to have children include fruit trees and brass windchimes (for the garden or areas outside the house). Make sure you take care of the trees really well, though. As for the bedroom, try hanging a pair of paper red lanterns near the bed. Put a basket of fresh fruits in your bedroom. Pomegranates, in particular, are believed to represent fertility. Also, don't place bonzai, cacti or dried flowers inside your house, especially in the bedroom.

Hey thanks, this was really helpful. I'm still not exactly sure where the best place for my bed is. Is it ok for your feet to be pointing towards the wall where the door is, as long as you aren't directly in line with it? Or should it be pointing a different direction altogether? And does it matter what gua the head of the bed is in??

isha 23 months ago

we have 3 doors in a straight line starting from the living room till the bedroom.have read that this is not good.any remedy?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 23 months ago

@Chrissa - Yes, it's okay as long as the foot of your bed doesn't point directly to the door. You can calculate your "gua number" (from your date of birth) to decide which direction the head of your bed should be. Many feng shui websites provide a "gua calculator" as well as useful info about auspicious and unlucky directions for each gua number. :)

@isha - Having 3 doors in a straight line could mean that when your wealth luck comes in, it might go right out. The remedy is extremely simple. Don't keep all the doors open at the same time. :)

Mimi 23 months ago

Quick question - the comment about the bed not facing a door. Is it any door or just the door that leads to the hall? The bed might face a bathroom door. Is that ok? If it's not ok, which positioning would be better? The bed facing the bathroom door or the bed facing a set of windows but you'll see the bed immediately once you enter the bedfroom? Both situations would have the bed against a wall. Thanks for your advice.

Hi om, I'm about to move to a condo in 3 weeks. The master bedroom has a bathroom and also, a sink and a mirror inside the bedroom. For the placement of the bed, I can only see it under a window and in line of the door. There's no other way I can move the bed. Is there a cure for the window and bed in line of the door? Are there any crystal cures such as hanging a crystal between the door and the bed? Please advise as this is the only position I cab place the bed in the room. Hi, evoxiris. There are 3 things you should do:

1.) Hang a crystal ball somewhere between the bed and the en suite bathroom.

2.) Keep the window and curtain closed when you sleep.

3.) Place a piece of furniture between the foot of the bed and the door. It could be a bookcase, upholstered bench, chair, etc.

I am moving into an apt you walk in to the left is a walkin closet, center across from door a window, and on the same wall in right hand corner is a bathroom. I can put my bed as in your example above but then I have the opening to bathroom across from me. I heard this is not good. So I was going to put the head of my bead against the wall you come in which would then have the head of bed between the entrance and bathroom and the window at the foot of bed. Know after reading I am not sure what I should do. Can you please advice!?! Thanks so much

Hi, if the foot of your bed points to the bathroom door, you can simply fix that by placing a piece of furniture between the bed and the bathroom. It could be a bookcase, a small bench, a room divider, etc. Hanging a crystal somewhere between the bed and bathroom will also help create more positive chi. :)

Hi Anna, having a bed under a sloped ceiling is ok as long as your headboard is positioned directly under the highest point of the ceiling, not the lowest. Also, you should put a piece of furniture or room divider between the foot of your bed and the door.

Hi Lina, you should put a piece of furniture between the foot of your bed and the French door. It doesn't have to be something big or something that would prevent you from looking at the nice view outside. A bench or small bookcase maybe. Other than that, your bedroom feng shui sounds all right.

Well, the shelf itself is not necessarily bad feng shui. It depends what you put on it. Try not to place items that might contain too much yang energy on that shelf (radio, laptop, too many books, etc.) Instead decorate it with lighter objects, such as framed photographs of you and your spouse or small figurines.

The bed seems to be in a good position and I will be taking down the mirror, cleaning out under the bed and I've bought a pair of night stands, but there is a light fixture over the bed that I can't remove or get the bed away from, it's positioned more towards the foot of the bed. How can I counter act the negativity of this? We do have a pair of small lights on either side of the bed too to create softer light. Also, the edges of the night stand are squared...any way to balance out the cutting chi? Thanks!

Hi Leelee, thanks for stopping by. An overhead light fixture is not ideal for a bedroom. So just don't use it. Use your small lamps instead. As for the square nightstands, you may put a piece of fabric (like a small tablecloth) on top of it to cover the edges. :)

@lisa - A skylight is like a window, it could drain your energy and make you feel like you never get enough sleep. Putting a sheer canopy over the bed can be a good feng shui cure for this. As for the ceiling fan, simply avoid using it.

Hi Om Paramapoonya! I saw your hub on my sidebar! I couldn't help but click as this has held my interest for some time. I rented several documentary dvd's on the subject and learned that even Donald Trump had one of his strip malls designed by a Fung Shui master! Everything he does seems to turn out good monetarily so I don't doubt it had any problems lol :)

Anyway, strange that before I even rented the dvd's I had already picked out a light green and a darker green, and had a "outdoor" type them I wanted to go into. Right down to already getting the green sheets and a Safari type bedspread. Before I could finish I was injured, and not only could I not finish the room, but I cannot lay flat on my back. The room is set up strangely though. Not at all like your photos. It's rectangle, and the door is in the middle! I already had the head of my bed at one end and the dresser with mirror on the side. It too is green, although several people have argued with me it is brown. (I have a colorblind uncle, but they say females cannot be, but I still see a green dresser)lol! Anyway, I never keep anything under the bed either, but it's been about 5 years and I'm almost able to be able to sleep on my bed again. Since I already have the green paints and things to make it so much more like outdoors, I am wondering about the ceiling. I am going to put a ceiling fan in, but it wouldn't be over the bed anyway, so my question is, do you think a light blue would be good for my ceiling? I've already considered it, and the only white I want to be the door frame and window frames.

I also have already no electronic devices at all in my bedroom because my doctor had told me years ago, that we should never bring everyday things into our rooms, to leave them out. And to never do NON related sleep things in the room like play a game or work, or tv. Those are for the rooms they belong in, and he was not into Fung Shui he just said it was good practice to keep our minds in the mind frame that "bedrooms are for REST and SLEEP." What do you think about a light blue for a ceiling? Thank you for a response, I've always had sleep problems so I'm trying anything new that would be helpful. Thanks. -Kathy

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 12 months ago

Yep, light blue will be a good color to paint your ceiling. The color green on the walls represents the wood element. Earth and water go well with wood. So you should paint your ceiling with a color that symbolizes one of these elements. Brown, pastel yellow and blue are all good choices. As for the ceiling fan, maybe you shouldn't install it. Since you tend to have sleeping problems, the yang energy from a fan or a lighting fixture on the ceiling could easily disturb your sleep, even though it's not positioned right above your bed.

Sawadee ka!

I totally agree with the rest of readers and fans of your article. Your article is indeed very useful and informative. Most importantly is that you are so helpful and responds actively to all those who have submitted their comments :) Do keep up the good work!

Meanwhile, I do have a few queries in need of your advice/feedback:

1. My bed is positioned right under the ceiling fan and unfortunately there is no possibility of me moving the bed. How can this fengshui flaw be countered?

2. The foot of my bed faces my wardrobe which has 3 sliding doors. I can't place any fixtures between the foot of my bed and the wardrobe as the space is merely 1ft wide :( Please help.

3. My wardrobe door is not exactly of mirror finishing however it's of tinted acrylic door finishing. Is this considered bad?

I hope you are able to give me some good advice on the above and thank you in advance!! :)

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 11 months ago

Sawaddee Ka! Thanks for visiting this page. Here are my suggestions:

1. Just avoid using the fan and it'll be ok. Or if your budget allows, install a canopy over the bed.

2. Hang a small crystal somewhere between the wardrobe and the bed. The wardrobe contains a lot of stagnant chi, and hanging a crystal is an easy feng shui fix for that.

3. Don't worry about the acrylic finish. As long as it's not a mirror, it's fine for a bedroom.

metalla 11 months ago

Hi. We're moving into a new apartment and I want to know the best way we can "feng shui" the bedrooms.

Masters: when you enter the room, on the left side of the room is a bathroom and next to that is a walk-in closet = 2 doors; on the wall opposite the doorway is a window (not directly facing the door. It looks like the best place to put our full-sized bed would be on the wall facing the bathroom and walk-in closet doors.

Bedroom #2: My mom (grandma) and our baby are sharing this room. Grandma has a bed with cabinet storage underneath (no headboard). Baby has a crib. Both beds are white. The door to their room is at the end of the short hall, there's a window on the wall opposite the door, window faces their walk-in closet. Can we position the crib perpendicular to grandma's bed? Their room is small.

Thanks.

metalla 11 months ago

Also, the bottom foot part of our bed is blocked coz we have this kind of bedframe: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/malm-bed

Reading from your past advice to similar problems of beds facing doorways, does that blocked frame bottom thing count as "something that comes between the bed and the door"?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 11 months ago

Hi, Metalla!

It's okay to put the head of your bed against the wall facing the bathroom and closet doors. Make sure you keep the toilet seat and bathroom door closed all the time. One other problem is that the closet and footboard contain a lot of stagnant chi, so it might be a good idea to hang a crystal somewhere between your bed and the closet. True, the footboard can be good because it stands between the door and the bed, but at the same time, it's considered to be a "chi blocker." You don't need to buy a new bed, though. A crystal should help facilitate the flow of chi.

As for the second bedroom, you can place the crib perpendicular to the bed as long as neither of them faces the bedroom door directly.

I would really love to have a dressing table (with a big mirror) and I bought one and have placed it next(right hand side) of the Bed Headboard and that mirror faces the door of the Bedroom whereas the position of the Bed is really fine its diagonally opposite to Bedroom Entrance. But as per you Article , Mirror should not reside in Bedroom. Do I have any other alternatives for this.?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Yeah, it's not ideal to have a mirror in the bedroom. Feng shui practitioners believe it can bounce the chi around too much and does not promote a peaceful environment. But if you really want to keep the mirror in your bedroom, just make sure the mirror doesn't face the bed. :)

Hi! I just sent a question regarding the placement of my daughter's bed and here's additional information: putting the headboard under the window will give the bed a "command position" because it is diagonally across the door. But putting it on the same wall as the door will give it a solid wall support. Which one should I choose?

Hello, Teacher G. It's okay if the head or one side of the bed shares the same wall with the door. But I don't recommend placing the head of the bed beneath the window. @Anu - It depends on what type of feng shui strategy you're using. According to a more complex type of feng shui, you'll need to calculate your gua number (using your date of birth) in order to determine which direction your bed should face. This article, however, is based on a more general and basic feng shui, so I'd suggest you shouldn't worry about the directions too much. Instead, just make sure the foot of your bed doesn't point at the door directly and the head of your bed isn't right under a window.

@PMK - Since your career section is in the kitchen, I just have a few suggestions on how to decorate and utilize this area. 1). You might want to decorate the kitchen with fresh flowers or potted plants. Iris, lily and lucky bamboo are some good options, as they all symbolize growth and wisdom which should be beneficial for your husband's career luck. 2). Don't always use just one or two stove burners. If there're four burners on your stove, make sure you alternately and regularly use all of them. Feng shui practioners believe that unused burners symbolize missed opportunities. 3). You may also decorate the kitchen with other lucky objects, such as i-ching coins, fish figurines and crystals.

Dear Om, Thank you sooooo much for the reply. After reading your article, I have made some changes i.e I have put one small waterfall with lamp in the career area i.e my kitchen. I have started getting enquiries or atleast a reply stating that they have received the CV. My worry is the distance between the lamp and my gas burner is just one feet away. Will it effect my hubby's career opportunities? Is placing a running horse facing the main entrance a good symbol for success? We have a french glass window of 8 feet high and 6 feet broad in the fame area. Please suggest some remedy. Please tell where should I place the bamboo/i-ching coins, fish figues etc (North, east, west or south).

@PMK - Everything sounds fine, except the direction the horse figurine faces. The running horse symbolizes authority, strength and success, so you shouldn't make it face the main entrance, which makes it look like the horse is running out of the house. As for the bamboo, i-ching coins and fish figurines, you can put them anywhere in your career, wealth and fame areas.

@Arsh - Is your house located at the end of a T-junction, or on top of a hill by itself, or surrounded by tall buildings? It's hard to pinpoint what is wrong with your house feng shui without knowing much about its surroundings. One thing you can try is to hang a bagua mirror on the outside of your entrance door to prevent bad energy and bad luck from coming inside.

Hi Alicia, I'm glad you sleep well with the head of your bed under the window. I have spoken to lots of people who said their lives are perfectly fine without feng shui, and also many others who said feng shui has really worked for them. I can understand why you think feng shui is a silly thing, but I'd like to remind you that it is a totally harmless practice. No animals are sacrificed. No one's well-being is put at risk. And it doesn't cause any harm to society in any way. It's just all about how people choose to arrange their furniture or decorate their home. I believe many feng shui strategies are based on common sense anyway. The fact that feng shui practitioners advise people against placing the head of the bed under a window, for example, isn't totally nonsensical. The cold air can easily come in through the window in the winter and make you sick or disturb your sleep. Or the sound of the rain against the window pane may wake you up at night. I'm not saying it's absolutely the best way to organize our home. All I'm saying is it has worked for many people and it doesn't hurt anyone. If you don't believe in feng shui, that's fine. But you should also respect others who choose to practice it.

@R - The fire and wood elements are believed to be beneficial for the fame area. So you can decorate the area with any red objects, items that are made from wood, or place a potted plant with red flowers on your balcony. As for the "Chinese knife", I just want to make sure you're talking about the "coin knife", which is a collection of Chinese coins arranged and tied together in the sword shape. If this is what you're talking about, you should hang it up in your wealth or career sections. However, if you mean a real knife, don't hang it up anywhere. According to feng shui, hanging up objects with very sharp edges are inauspicious.

Dear Om:

Many thanks for this very useful hub. I also liked a lot the Small Bedroom ideas hub.

My house is very small, I live with some pack rat relatives who love clutter. My bedroom is tiny and my bed is almost immediately behind my desk, where I work about 10 hours per day.

Since I started working at home I am less productive than when I worked in a real office and need way more time finishing a task than before. I get distracted easily and can't focus at all. A friend suggested Feng Shui, so here I am and I'm glad to find this good stuff ;-) I thought about a folding screen in order to hide the view of the desk from the bed, but probably there isn't enough space for one. Can I put books, documents and other things in trays under the bed? (can't have a loft bed and here it's a very earthquake-prone country, so the trays would be a good alternative). Could you please give me a little bit more of advice on how to apply Feng Shui in this case? Thanks a lot in advance.

Hiya OM, I love your advice - well done!

Is a dreamcatcher on the wall my bed is against ok feng shui? Also, there is no other place to move my bed, it faces the window but the head part is in path of door.

Wow, this is great so much interesting information. Thank you. How do closets figure into any room set up? Or, perhaps I mean, what do they symbolize (e.g., need a closet on the career side be counter-acted in any way?). Are crystals universally good at counter acting interrupted flow? Also in a child's room, what does the chid section symbolize?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 7 months ago

@Ana - Hi, Ana. Putting a screen between the desk and the bed will be a good feng shui cure if your have problem sleeping. The position of your desk is also important, though. Make sure your back (when you sit at the desk) doesn't face a window but a wall. Also, you should be able to see the door from your your desk. I don't recommend storing your belongings beneath the bed (unless you really have no other options). Maybe you should consider wall shelves instead.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

@Claire May - No, I don't think a dreamcatcher is against feng shui. And if the head of your bed isn't right under the window, that's fine.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 7 months ago

@Jules - I don't think the closet has any particular symbolic meaning. It is a storage area, so it contains a lot of stagnant energy, which isn't ideal to be placed in the wealth or career sections. Crystals can be placed in almost every room to increase the flowing of positive chi and counteract negative energy. Don't put crystals or any lucky objects in the bathroom, though. It's best not to glamorize the bathroom too much. As for the children section in a child's bedroom, it symbolizes the general well-being of the child and the relationship or understanding between the child and parents.

Hi OM, I just moved into a new place, and am still rearranging my bedroom. I have read somewhere that it's not really a good idea to have your headboard on the same side as a door, but that is how my bed is arranged right now. I made a diagram below to show how my current bedroom is arranged. I am wondering if it would be better if I just move my bed on the opposite wall, feet facing East. My worry is that to my left would be the door to the balcony, and I'm not sure if that would be okay. I will have a better view of the main entrance to my bedroom door though, which I currently cannot see well because it is on the same side as my bed. I also have a desk that I am planning on moving to face the window, but it is currently lying against the bathroom wall. Please advice me on what would be best.

Oops! Sorry! I guess text diagrams don't show right. Sorry for multiple posts!

Here is a link to a screen cap of the image I made on the text box though:

http://i56.tinypic.com/6qz402.jpg

If that doesn't work, I'll just reiterate:

Right now, my headboard is on the east, facing west. To my right is the window. On the same side as the window is a door to the balcony. In front of me is a blank wall. On the same side of the wall where my bed is currently against, is the main door to my bedroom. To the direct left of my bed is the closet. Upon entering the room, you face the bathroom door, only it is slightly to the right, and the closet previously described, is to the left.

I hope that is detailed enough, and thank you in advanced!

My basic question is: Will it be okay to have the bed facing east, but with the door to the balcony to the left side of my bed? There does not seem to be that many options for me :(

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Hi, Reiko. I think you should move the bed to the opposite wall. You can hang a curtain over the balcony door if you're worried too much chi might flow in and disturb your sleep.

Hi, Ana. I just took a look at your diagram, and yep, you seem to have lots of stuff in one little room! I'm not sure how big your desk is, but if it's possible, you should change its position just a little. Keep the desk in the same area but have it face the north wall instead of west. This way you can see the door from your desk (symbolizing clear perception and good command of your own life) and your back will be supported by the south wall (symbolizing stability). If it looks too cramped on the left side of the room, maybe you can put the printer table somewhere along the west wall, near the door.

@Nikkili - That's interesting. I had never heard that using dark brown as the main color of the bedroom can bring bad luck or illnesses. However, I know that some feng shui practitioners believe that dark brown is associated with the fall or autumn, so it could cause lethargy or lack of ambition if you use it as the main color of your bedroom. But you can easily fix that problem by using decor items, furniture or bed sets of lighter or more inspiring colors, such as purple, green, orange or white.

Hello, Mike. Does the divider conceal the entire sight of the door? It's good that you put something between the foot of your bed and the door, but ideally, you should still be able to see the door from your bed. So a bookcase or free-standing shelving unit that allows you to partially see the door would be a better option than a tall room divider. As for your other question, I'm afraid I have no good advice for you. Feng shui might help couples have a smoother relationship or help single people have better romance luck, but I'm not sure if it can revive a failed relationship.

Hi Om,

Your hub is very inspiring! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us :-) I live in a one bedroom apartment where the kitchen leads into the bedroom and the bedroom leads into the bathroom. I have two questions for you: 1. In bed our feet are facing the wall of the bathroom and the toilet is directly behind that wall - is that bad feng shui? 2. As you walk into my bedroom I have a mirror that reflects the stove in the kitchen - is that bad feng shui? Thanks so much!

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 5 months ago

@Kailey - Having the foot of the bed pointing at the closet door is not ideal, but not as bad as having it directly facing the bedroom door. So don't worry about it. And it's better to have the head of your bed under the highest part of the slope ceiling. If you can't reposition the bed, hang a crystal over your bed, or place a small mirror on the head of the bed or nightstand. And make the mirror face the ceiling. Also, it's okay to keep the basket under the bed as long as you keep the entire area under your bed clean and organized.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 5 months ago

@Angie - No, there's nothing wrong with having the foot of the bed facing the bathroom wall. As for the second question, it sounds like the mirror directly faces the bedroom entrance? If so, it might be better for you to place the mirror somewhere else because the mirror reflects the chi and stops it from entering the bedroom. Accordingly, there might not be enough energy flowing in your bedroom.

Hi. You can go ahead and place your bed where you want it to be. Don't worry too much about the window. Just close the blinds or curtain before you go to bed. Keep in mind that the curtains should be thick and heavy rather than flowy and translucent. This is because the heavy drape symbolically transforms a window into a wall.

This was a very helpful hub. Though I still have a few questions. I've heard that keeping a water fountain in the bedroom is bad luck and will make you worry. I for one find the sound of water very relaxing and it helps drown out the sound of the road beside the house. Would it still be bad to keep one? Also do you know what should I do if there is a huge window in the way. I'm trying to put a sort of bookshelve in the knowledge section but the windows in the way. I could put it the corner put then it would be in the area next to the knowledge area. (Forgot it)

Thanks in advance!

Om Paramapoonya profile image

@the Curious - The energy in the bedroom is supposed to be calm, quiet and grounded. A water fountain creates a lot of movement and sound, so it keeps the energy very active and doesn't promote serenity. That's all. If you really like to have a water fountain in the bedroom, choose a very small one; adjust the flow of the water to be very gentle; and don't place it too close to the bed. As for your knowledge area, it's actually good to have a window there because that means the area can get a lot of natural light. The brightness in the knowledge area promotes wisdom and clarity of the mind. So it's ok if you can't put a bookshelf there. Try not to close the curtains or blinds, but allow lots of light to shine in.

Viola2889 4 months ago

Hi Om,

So in regards to feng shui, it seems my bedroom layout is extremely problamatic. I currently sleep in the box room, which means I am a little tight on space. I've uploaded an image below, just so you can get an idea of what it currently looks like atm.

http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/viola2889

So Image 1, is the way my bedroom currently is. As you can see part of my head would lay under the window when I sleep, which isn't exactly great.

Image 2, is basically an option if I were to rearrange the bed position. One big plus is that there would be more space in the room. But as you can see, I'd still be laying partly beneath the window, and the foot head would touch the wall. Also I know that if the bed is directly aligned with the door, it's not ideal. But does the same apply to this layout, even though it's not in the death position, the feet/legs are still visible, well the sides of them?

Another option was buying a futon, but the only problem is if turned into a bed, it wouldn't have a headboard, plus I don't know how comfortable they really are. But it would mean there would be more space!

Apologies for the lengthy post, but I'd appreciate the advice. :)

Om Paramapoonya profile image

@Viola - Option 1 is actually ok, because the head of your bed is only partially beneath the window. Plus, you can always cover the window with blinds or a heavy drape. Option 2 wouldn't be so good, because the foot of your bed will be against a wall. From feng shui perspective, that is a chi blocker and can hinder your progress in life. As for option 3 (futon), it's ok that it has no headboard, as you can place the head of the futon against a wall. A wall can provide a solid support the same way a headboard does.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@Nichola - Having the headboard against a wall connecting to the bathroom and placing it under a window are both not ideal. But I would choose the latter, because you can close the window and roll down the curtain as you sleep. Or if your bed has a headboard, it doesn't need to be placed against any wall at all.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@Nichola - If the head of your bed is right under the lowest part of the slope ceiling, place a small mirror on top of the headboard and make it face the ceiling. A bed with a footboard, by the way, is not ideal because it's considered to be a chi blocker. And for people of kua number 9, north is not the only lucky direction. East, south and southeast are also good, and you can arrange the head of your bed to face any of these directions.

On one side I think that there really is something to it. I know of chi and and have utilized it in martial arts in the past. But this seems a bit different, I never thought of my house having chi.

I'm not saying it isn't real. I'm just not a believer. Perhaps you have some experiments I could try to help convince me?

@moon - You want to use both yellow and orange for your kids' bedroom walls? That might create too much yang energy. Maybe you should pick only one of them and choose a pastel shade instead of a bright shade.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@ScentsForCandles - I've never heard of any scientific studies about feng shui. But I think a lot of feng shui rules are based on common sense and have psychological effects on us. For example, from a feng shui perspective, we shouldn't place the head of our bed right under a window. That makes sense in way because sounds or cold winter air that seep in through the window could disturb our sleep. And when you look at the yin and yang colors, you'll find that yin colors are less vibrant and therefore tend to create calming effects. Yang colors, on the other hand, are bright and bold so they tend to cheer up and energize us. I'm not trying to convince you to become a feng shui lover, but only trying to show you that certain things in feng shui do make sense. :)

I am wondering if it is ok to have a mirror in the bedroom if it's not near the bed? Or would you advise against it all together?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago via iphone

It's not ideal because it could create too much yang energy and cause a restless sleep, but if you normally don't have sleeping problems, having a mirror in the bedroom is probably ok. Just place it where it won't face the bed directly.

deepavyasa 4 months ago

Hi,

Our Masterbedroom door actually has 2 doors for closing. I read somewhere that 2 doors means one of the partners will mostly be away from home. My husband travels a lot on job & is available only in the weekends. We want him to have local projects so that he can spend more time with family. We bought a crystal chime to be hung in the pathway leading to the master bedroom. Are there any other suggestions? Thanks,

Ian 4 months ago

Which is more acceptable for bed placement: Putting it against the wall, so the headboard is on the same wall as the door, or across the room, so the headboard is on the far wall from the door, but in the opposite corner where the side of the bed would be under a window?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@deepavyasa - Are the two doors directly aligned with each other? If so, you might want to place a piece of furniture or room divider between them so the chi that enters the room won't go right out. Also, hanging a crystal chime in the hallway is a great idea.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@Ian - It depends on your personal situation. If you often have problems sleeping or experience a lack of energy, you might want to keep your bed away from the window. But if you're trying to make progress in your business or career, placing the bed in the diagonal corner from the door is supposed to be a more auspicious spot even if it is under a window.

I am looking to buy mandarin ducks but there are so many types out there like wooden, brass and rose quartz, some are on a lotus and some are not. Which ones are the best to buy and where to place in the home and if you know of any good uk sellers plz tell me. Also one more question I am wanting to put windchimes up in my house, may be outside my main door, can it be any amount of rods? Also I want to hang another windchime on my stair case, it will be just before the landing about 3-4 steps away near a window, is That a gud idea?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@Sonvi - Yep, putting a piece of fabric over the mirror is a good idea. Orange is fine, but you might want to choose a light or pastel shade of orange so it won't create too much yang energy in the bedroom.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@Cat - The best place to put mandarin ducks is your "relationship area" of the house (visit http://om-paramapoonya.hubpages.com/hub/feng-shui- to find out where your relationship area is) or somewhere near your bed. I personally don't think the material matters that much but have heard that rose quartz is the most auspicious. Usually, feng shui practitioners place a 5-rod windchime near the main entrance for protection. Windchimes with 6 or 8 rods are also auspicious and can be placed in different areas of the house. And it's ok to hang a windchime over or near a staircase. Many people hang it between the main entrance and the staircase to slow down the chi that is rushing in.

I have a laughing Buddha which was gifted to me it standing with fan ( I think it is one) in left hand and holding a long twig type rope in right hand which has a sack on the back and just below his right hand where he is holding the rope there is a another small sack tied to the rope?? What does this Buddha mean?? And where shall I put him?? I am thinking of getting another Buddha but can u buy one for myself or does it have to be gifted?? As I want a Buddha which represent happy home but not sure which one to get as there are quite a few sitting Buddha.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@Vicky - I don't think that would really help. The idea of putting a bookshelf between the wall and the head of the bed is to separate the two from each other. Simply hanging up framed pictures might not be enough.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@Ricky - Honestly, I don't know what the fan and the rope represent. However, all types of laughing Buddha statues are supposed to symbolize happiness, kindness and properity. So the best spots to place a Budhha statue is the wealth, family or the "good luck center" areas of the house. (Visit http://om-paramapoonya.hubpages.com/hub/feng-shui- to find out where these areas are located.) And no, it doesn't have to be gifted; you can buy one for yourself.

The problem is that my living room is combined with my kitchen so that the east wall corner is missing as well as my wealth corner (SE).. Can i feng shui my bedroom with just the SE and SW or is it bad if I apply incomplete feng shui in my living room..

hello, im single and moving to a new house, is it good feng shui to have a double bed with no bedside tables? can i still find my future partner.

thanks

DoraBoots 3 months ago

The headboard of my bed is right behind bathroom. Is it good or bad?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 months ago

@Beth - It's ok not to have bedside tables but you should still accessorize the room with objects that come in pairs. Potted peonies and rose-quartz crystals, according to feng shui practitioners, are also great for enhancing romance luck.

@DoraBoots - You mean it shares a wall with the bathroom? If yes, that is considered inauspicious, especially if a toilet or sink is right behind that wall.

DoraBoots 3 months ago

Yes. Unfortunately, I have toilet and sink right behind that wall. And I cannot change the bed to any other direction since south is my best and favourable position for bed as per feng shui and right now my bed is setup in such a way that I put my head towards south (which is right behind the toilet and sink :( ). So, do you suggest any remedies/alternatives for this one?

sir, i am having a bedroom in the southeast corner and its balcony facing the south side. I came to know that the bedroom in the southeast corner itself is not good according to fengshui rules and we are not suppose to keep the balcony in the south side. can you suggest some remedy for it? Thank you

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 months ago

@DoraBoots - You might want to put a piece of furniture (it doesn't have to be big) between the head of the bed and the wall. Another feng shui cure I've heard is that you can place a small mirror on the head of the bed and have it face the wall.

@izoramarak - I honestly don't know much about the feng shui strategies that involve specific directions. The strategy that I've been using is called "aspirations of the bagua" which is much more simple. You can read my article about it here: http://om-paramapoonya.hubpages.com/hub/feng-shui-

Sheryl 3 months ago

Hello Om.  Thank you for all of the great information! It seems my husband and I have done everything wrong with our bedroom!  First of all, our room has not been a relaxing place simply because we have never really done much of anything with it and it has an unfinished feeling to it.  We built our house a few years ago and our room seems to be the last one we have attended to. Well, I've finally had enough and have to decided to make some changes. However, it seems that because of the design of our room, we are stuck with one of the "don'ts" you listed no matter what we do.  So my question will be, which is the least negative scenario as far as the placement of our bed?  I tried figuring out which direction based on our kua numbers, but my husband and I are different (he's a 6 and I'm a 9), which means our choices are SE or NE, one of which will be the least negative for one of us.   Well, first of all, I'm not sure I understand what it means for the bed to be facing a certain direction.  Does it mean that if I am standing at the foot of the bed looking at it, I am facing the direction?  Or is it when I am sitting up in bed, am I then facing the direction?  Also, in order to face either of those directions, the bed would have to be placed on a diagonal in one of the corners.  Is that acceptable or should the headboard be against a wall?  Also, there is only one wall to put the bed against that does not have windows, and that wall is the same wall the door is on.  How important is it to not put the bed in front of windows?  There are so many considerations, and our room seems to fail at all of them!  As far as the color, our room is painted a dark golden yellow.  The window treatments are roman shades, (mounted into the frames), and are yellow and a soft red with a little orange as well.  The bedding is made up of the same soft red and golden yellow.  Obviously, I can change the bedding, but the walls and window treatments must stay the same for now.  So, as you can tell, we have way too much yang goimg on.  Can you give me any suggestions for how to bring some yin into the room without it looking hideous.  I'm considering purchasing a new headboard along with new nightstands.  I was planning on going with a dark wood, but would it be better for me to go with black?  Is there anything else I should be considering or that you could suggest?  I'm sorry for all of the questions.  I wish I could hire you as a consultant, but unfortunately we are on different sides of the nation.  Anyway, thank you for whatever advice you can offer! :)

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 months ago

@Jtjr - I'm sorry. I don't know much about Hinduism so I have no idea what type of religious object might have been there.

@Sheryl - When you hear the phrase "the bed faces a certain direction", it means the direction that the head of the bed points at. So yeah, it would mean you're standing at the foot of the bed looking at it. Having the head of the bed under a window isn't recommended simply because there might be too much chi coming in and out through the window and cause a restless sleep. However, if you have no sleeping problems and would like to put your bed there anyway, it is ok. Just cover the window with a heavy drape or keep the blinds closed when you sleep. Arranging a room for two people with different kua numbers can be difficult. You may want to consider using the "aspirations of the bagua" chart to feng shui your room instead. Here's the link to it: http://om-paramapoonya.hubpages.com/hub/feng-shui- But if you'd rather make the bed face the NE or SE according to your and your husband's kua numbers, the bed doesn't need to be placed diagonally; it just has to be in the SE or NE corner of the room. To incorporate more yin into your room, besides decorating it with more yin colors, you might also want to add more earth element to it. The earth element symbolizes stability and nurturing, so it could counterbalance the active yang energy in your room. Materials that represent the earth element include ceramic, clay and jade. As for the headboard and nightstands, black might be better, as it contains strong yin energy.

Hi om,

Great tips. Let say my main entrance to my house is facing SouthWest. My bedroom on 2nd floor, with my bed headboard is facing SouthWest/window as well whereas my bedroom door is top far right of my bed. Is it ok if i turn my bed the other way where my leg face the window (but is facing towards main entrance of ground floor)?

@simonsayz - Yes, the foot of your bed can face the window. There's nothing inauspicious about that. And you shouldn't worry about the position of the bed in relation to the main entrance on the ground floor at all. As long as your bed doesn't face the bedroom door directly, it's good.

Hi, I was wondering, Our bedroom in our new house has nothing in it yet- just bed on floor and cream walls with cream sheer curtains (the under layer- awaiting a top set of curtains), We wanted to get a bed that has a head and foot board, but it is a decorative metal bed with warm rich wood posts- the head and foot boards are open air with just scrolling- not a solid surface. And I have neutral cream carpet- For our new marriage, and good fortune, good financial stability, what colors should I use to decorate with? I have the bed against the wall in the perfect place- our room shape is perfect for feng shui, so positioning is no problem. There is not anything in the room yet though.
