Feng shui is practical not only for people who live in a house, but for apartment occupants as well. No matter how small your apartment is, there are many convenient ways to improve the feng shui of your place without having to spend a lot of money and time. In this article, you will learn how to feng shui your apartment, using a feng shui strategy called "aspirations of the Bagua" which is a very famous feng shui method in Hong Kong. For those of you who live in a studio apartment or a little dorm room, I have some practical feng shui ideas for you as well. Keep in mind that the important thing about feng shui is to keep everything in good balance and let the chi (life force) flow through each room freely. It is not so much about luxury or showiness, but simplicity and comfort.

Feng Shui Tips on How to Choose an Apartment Building

  • Square, oblong, round or pa-kua (eight-sided) buildings are propitious. Try to avoid moving into an irregular-shaped building, because it symbolizes incompleteness. An L-shaped building, for example, gives an impression that something has been missing or cut off.
  • The back of your apartment building should be protected in some way, either by a hill or another building. A solitary apartment building on top of a hill, according to feng shui practice, is extremely inauspicious as it is completely unprotected. The wind will blow the chi away, and the water will drain the chi downhill.
  • Other buildings nearby and surrounding should be lower or about the same height as your apartment building. A much taller neighboring structure can cause negative chi, especially if it is situated in front of your apartment building's main entrance.
  • The parking area, according to most feng shui gurus, should not be a part of the building itself, unless it is located underground. Ideally, it should be outside the building, because vehicles coming in and out can create too much chi and turbulance to the occupants.
  • Every building, from a feng shui perspective, should have a back door. Remember that the heart of feng shui is to allow chi to flow conveniently. When the chi enters through the front door, there should be an exit for it to go out so that more chi can come in.
  • In feng shui tradition, water is believed to bring wealth and good fortune. If your apartment building is located near a lake or river, that is considered extremely auspicious. This belief, however, is not only applied to natural sources of water. A pond, fountain or swimming pool, especially if it is situated near the main entrance of the building, is supposed to bring good luck as well.

Feng Shui Items for Wealth

No Amazon products found

The wealth section is located as far to the left of the front door as possible. This area is great for a kitchen, dining room and bedroom. It is the worst location for a bathroom because all your wealth, according to feng shui practitioners, will be symbolically flushed away. If your bathroom is in this section, try to keep the toilet seat and the door closed. Hanging a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door is also a good remedy for this situation, as it symbolically makes the bathroom disappear.

If you want to achieve financial and business success, try to keep this area of your apartment well-lit all the time and decorate it with wealth-related feng shui objects such as an aquarium, coins or fish statuette.

The fame section is situated in the middle back area of the apartment. It is suitable for a bedroom or work area. To increase your good reputation, increase the light in this area, hang up pictures of yourself and display any awards or trophies you have won.

Feng Shui Items for Relationship and Marriage

40mm Crystal Heart Prisms #870-40
Amazon Price: $4.36
List Price: $7.99

The area as far to the right of the front door is the relationship section, which is perfect for a bedroom. To enhance your love life, decorate this area with pictures of you and your partner, crystals, things that come in pairs and relationship-related feng shui objects such as dragon and phoenix, or mandarin ducks. Avoid placing a mirror in this area; feng shui practitioners believe that a mirror tends to invite a third party into your relationship.

The family location symbolizes both family ties and the health of people in your family. This area should be used for a living room or dining room where family members spend time together. To activate this section and enhance harmony among family members, keep this area bright and organized, and decorate the walls with family photos. Potted plants, in feng shui tradition, can also be used to enhance good health and eliminate stagnation of the chi.

Feng Shui Crystal Balls

30mm Vintage Crystal Blue Feng Shui Ball
Amazon Price: $0.01
List Price: $19.99

The children section is located on the right of the front door between the relationship and mentors areas. It is great for a kid's bedroom or living room. To improve the understanding between you and your children, activate this area by increasing the light and eliminating all the clutter. For people who try to have children, feng shui gurus advise that hanging up a crystal ball attached to a red ribbon or placing fresh flowers in this area can be very auspicious.

The knowledge area is on the left side, in the front part of your apartment. It should be used as a study room or library. You can improve your study and enjoy your hobby the most in this area, so try to keep it clean and well lit. Keeping books or any items related to whatever you are interested to learn in this section is also very beneficial.

Feng Shui Items for Career

No Amazon products found

Between the knowledge and mentors areas is the career section. This is where you should put your desk and everything related to your work. In order to progress in your career, increase the amount of light in this section, keep the chi flowing freely by hanging up a wind chime, and place a career-related feng shui object on your desk.

The mentors location represents advice and support from others. It is another good area to be used as a living room. If you feel that you have always struggled alone without any help from friends or family, it is time to activate this section of your apartment. A crystal is a good decorating item for this area. A potted chrysanthemum plant, in feng shui belief, can also be used to improve friendship as it is the symbol of happiness and laughter.

The central area surrounded by the eight sections is called "the good luck center." Some people believe it is the spiritual area where religious objects should be displayed. In feng shui practice, a chandelier is an ideal item to be placed here, as each crystal will reflect and send the positive chi to all other corners of the apartment.

Feng Shui Tips for Studio Apartments or Dorm Rooms

To feng shui a studio apartment or dorm room, you can just use the aspirations of the bagua above as well. Activate specific areas that you want to improve in your life. The easiest way to to arrange a little living space is to decide first where to place the bed. Although there is no bedroom, the bed should still be separated from the work area. The position of the bed should give an impresssion that it is well protected. The head of the bed should be against a wall, but not directly under a window because the chi will flow right out the window, making you feel exhausted despite a long night of sleep. Ideally, there should be a folding screen or a nice piece of fabric hanging from the ceiling to separate the bed from the rest of the room. Place the desk or dining table where it will receive plenty of light, and make sure there is enough space around it. The couch or sofa should be placed near the entrance or where you can see the front door without having to turn your head. The basic idea of decorating a small living space, in feng shui practice, is to make it appear spacious even though it is not. A mirror, therefore, can be a useful object to use for studio apartment decorating, as it symbolically doubles the size of the room. Also, since feng shui is all about keeping things in good balance, your studio apartment should not look too crowded on one side and too empty on the other side. All corners should be proportionately furnished.

Please help, or give me some advise if there is any bad fung shui having a bedroom on the loft type apartment. Meaning, the apartment has a loft where the bedroom and closets are located. These things are also fixed in its place and cannot be moved.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Fengshuineedone, you can use the same feng shui rules with your bedroom on the loft. If the room has a sloped ceiling, try not to place the bed under the low angle of the ceiling. Also, avoid putting the bed under an overhead lamp or ceiling fan.

Dear Om, (considering the floor layout of my ground floor unit is like a rectangle box which has) 1 door facing the front and road (being the shorter side of the rectangle box)where access to the unit is via the side of a small fence-like courtyard and another door is the unit entrance with door number (being at the far top end of the length of the rect. box) This door with number is the unit access from say the carpark below. :o)

Wow, great advice here. I have been considering doing this to my townhouse. What if the place is not designed in the best way? For example, the wealth is my living room, the relationship is my kitchen...I can't change it because I do not own my home, would you suggest decorating it according to Feng Shui (have pics of me and spouse in kitchen?) or just working with what I have and hope for the best. Thanx!

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 2 years ago

Yeah, I know what you mean. It could be quite frustrating for people who live in an apartment but want to feng shui the place. There's not much you can do about the floor plan. So just work with what you have. Besides hanging a pic of you and your spouse in your "relationship corner", you may also decorate it with love-luck objects such as phoenix figurines, peonies, mandarin ducks, a pair of candle holders and crystal balls.

This is an excellent hub. I love the pictures and examples too. Thank you for all the info. I have a question to ask you, Om. Everyone have their own signs, numbers, and directions, etc.. But the examples of the baqua with 9 rectangles above...IS IT THE SAME FOR EVERYONE to use the entrance of the whole space as starting point, then draw everything else the way you have it up there? If so, can you help me with any changes to the chart at the top if the entrance are more to the right or more in the middle? Thank you, Om.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 24 months ago

Yes, the chart above is the same for everyone. It's called the aspirations of the bagua, which is one of the simplest ways to use feng shui. However, I admit the more complex type of feng shui (that considers your birthdate and the astrological sign of each year) is probably more effective. And you can still use this chart even if the entrance of your apartment isn't exactly like the one in the chart.

Laurie 22 months ago

I live in a small apartment and some of the feng shui areas are in spots where I can't do much for the corresponding section of the bagua. My family section is located partially in the bathroom and mostly in the kitchen where is there no appropriate wall space for family photos- It is mostly all cabinets. Where do I put my photos of my adult family members such as parents and deceased beloved grandparents? (In the children section which is in the living room?) My romance section is in a corner of the living room that is the only spot to put my black chair, causing a stagnant corner behind the chair and lamp. My career section is in my son's room. My relationships and fame section partically are on the balcony- Can I add elements there?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 22 months ago

Laurie, the aspirations of the bagua map doesn't necessarily have to be used for the whole apartment. You can use it on a smaller scale to decorate each room as well. For example, the right corner of your bedroom is the best place to hang up pictures of you and your spouse, and place relationship-related feng shui objects. And since you can't place your desk in the career section of the apartment, you might put it in the career section of another room instead. You see what I mean? The most appropriate area to place pictures of your deceased loved ones will be the living room or dining room; don't put them in the bedroom.

Elizabeth 22 months ago

My apartment is multilevel, with the entry opening directly to stairs that lead to the main level. There is a landing, then the stairs continue to the bedroom area. I have no idea how to orient the bagua to my main living level, since the stairs lead directly to it. Any ideas? Or should I apply the bagua to each main room? One more question -- when considering a master suite, should I consider the adjoining bathroom, which opens only into the bedroom, as part of the bedroom or a separate space? (I know... lots of questions!)

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 22 months ago

Elizabeth, applying the bagua to each room is probably the easiest way to feng shui your place. And yes, you should consider an en-suite bathroom to be part of the bedroom. Also, a staircase that faces the main entrance directly could bring you bad luck in wealth. Feng shui cures for this include hanging a crystal ball near the entrance or placing a bushy plant at the bottom of the staircase. :)

One of the most useful blogs I've found and as I'm currently buying a new apartment I've been trawling the net for allsorts of feng shui and numerology stuff. Thanks! On the plans of my apartment, the career area is the main bathroom (does this mean my career will go down the toilet?? =)) and my mentor area is a store cupboard. Any advice?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 20 months ago

Hi lisasensei, you can hang a mirror on the outside of your bathroom door to reflect the chi and prevent it from entering the bathroom. Also, try to keep the toilet seat and bathroom door closed when you're not using it. As for your mentor area, you may be able to enhance it by placing a little plant near the cupboard. Some good plants for the mentor area include jasmine, orchid, peach and chrysanthemum. If you don't have enough room for a plant, you can hang a crystal, an 8-rod windchime or a feng shui coin sword in this area instead.

Hi! I just rented an apartment and the kitchen is in the middle. What are the effects and what can I do to change any negative effects?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 20 months ago

Hi Patty, having the kitchen in the middle of the apartment is not a bad thing. If it was a bathroom instead of a kitchen, that would be bad. My advice to you is that you should always keep this area well-lit, either by keeping the light on or opening the windows to let the sun shine in. If you have a small narrow kitchen, you might want to place a mirror somewhere near the stove. This will help maximize the flow of chi.

i just wish i read this hub a long time ago because I've been living in my apartment for about 2 years now and I think most of the don't s where in the apartment that I am in. Just want to ask, what will I do if my apartment building is L-shaped and our room/apartment room is just at the joint or what I mean is in the trigger part. Is there anything that I can do with that because I believe that the apartment brings us nothing but bad luck. We do not want to leave because of the cheap rent, another thing is that it's in a nice location being accessible to major places in the city.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 19 months ago

Try hanging a bagua mirror on the outside of your door. It might help you in two ways. First, it's supposed to reflect all the negative chi and prevent it from entering your apartment. And second, the reflection can create a visual illusion, making it look as though the "missing" part of the apartment building was there.

Cecilia 19 months ago

Hello! I have some questions and I hope you can help me. As soon as you walk in the main entrance of my apartment (in the living room) I have a red wall on the left. I know that red is not the color for this section but can I keep it red and add some objects with the appropriate color according to the Bagua chart. What effects will this red wall have on the positive chi.

I am also having a hard time placing the right elements in each section of the Bagua chart in my apartment. It is a small two bedroom condominium and I don’t have three sections. I feel like everything is in the wrong place according to the Bagua chart.

Entrance/Living room is in the Knowledge section then a wall in the family section. The master bedroom is in the Wealth section. A hallway with a closet and the bathroom are in the Fame section. In the Middle of the Bagua chart is the washer and dryer than a wall and on the other side of the wall is the Kitchen sink. Then the Kitchen shares the middle and the career section. Dining room in the Mentors section. Closet is in the children section and Child’s bedroom is in the Relationship section. The patio is along the house all the way on the left side of the Bagua chart. I don’t know if I should count the Patio as part of the chart. My back entrance is across the patio facing the Mentors section. There is a big tree in the middle of the patio. I don’t know what to do. Should I just focus on placing objects in these sections that have to do with each part of the Bagua or which objects can I put to fix the problems.

Thank you for your time.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 19 months ago

@Cecilia - There's nothing wrong with that red wall. Red symbolizes wealth and good luck, so it's not such a bad color for a living room. The only problem is that it might create a lot of yang energy instead of a relaxing atmosphere. So try to decorate the room with yin colors (black, gray, pink, etc) to balance it. It seems like many sections of your place are located where they actually shouldn't be. Instead of using the bagua chart for the whole apartment, try applying it to each room. That will make it much easier. For example, your bedroom isn't in the ideal relationship section, but you can still enhance your romantic luck by hanging pictures of you and your spouse near the far right corner of the room (which is where the relationship section is). Hope this helps. :)

Tess 19 months ago

There is a radiator in the relationship area of a studio apartment I want to rent and no good (solid wall) placement for my bed. The relationship & family are along a wall of 3 windows (the mentor area is where the bathroom is located--left of the main door in all white). If I place my bed just outside that area (relationship and family), along the entry wall of the main room, the head of the bed isn't supported by a solid wall. My purple sofa would be along the opposite wall (fame). Also, the kitchen is in the wealth area but the sink is in the main wealth corner. What can be done to make it work?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 19 months ago

Hi Tess, putting the sofa in the fame section is fine. The kitchen and sink are also okay where they are. I guess the only problem is your bed. Try putting the head of the bed against the back of a big bookcase or any kind of big solid furniture instead. If you really have no choice but to place the head of your bed under a window, just keep the window and curtain closed when you sleep.

Glenda 19 months ago

hello, we just moved into an apartment. my concern is the kitchen and dining is in one room where the table is directly in front of the sink. we have no space to move it anywhere else. what should we do to minimize the negative effect of the sink relative to the dining table?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 19 months ago

Hello, Glenda. It's actually not such a terrible thing to have a dining table in front of the sink. If your stove was placed right across from the sink, that would be a problem. (The stove represents the fire element whereas the sink symbolizes water, so they clash!) Just keep your table where it is. It's all right. If you're afraid your luck might drain down the sink, cover the drain hole with something when you're not using it. :)

Thank you.) The kitchen has a small laundry area which according to the chart, it is in the children section. What can I do?

Is it bad to have cabinets hanging from the ceiling (it is over my kitchen counter with the sink and a ledge. which looks like a bar facing the living room)

Thank you.

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 18 months ago

Hi Patricia, there are quite a few things you can do to improve your career section such as decorating it with your graduation pictures, framed certificates, award trophies, etc. Also, make sure this area is always bright and clean. Good colors for this section include gold, red and gray. Placing a little plant in this area is another easy way to stimulate growth and progress in your career. Any types of plants are fine, except thorny ones. As for the children section, it seems like there's not much you can do about it. Just keep the area organized, keep the washer and dryer closed, and maybe hang a crystal ball somewhere in this area. And the cabinets are fine where they are. :)

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Hi Merary, a staircase facing the front door can cause the chi to rush upstairs, and the toilet near the entrance may drain your energy and financial luck. In other words, there's not enough energy flow downstairs. To fix that, place a leafy plant at the bottom of the staircase, and hang a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door. Or you may just use the back door as the main entrance instead. Also, try to keep the bathroom door closed all the time. Since it's hard to apply the chart to the whole apartment, using it to feng shui each room might be a good solution. As for the location of the swimming pool, that is very auspicious. There's nothing to worry about.

I am making a decision between three apartments. Two are in houses and the third in a building. The apt in a building has a train that runs near it and car parking underneath the building. However, there is a large park and lake near the building also. The apt in house #1 has many doors that lead to nowhere (meaning they are sealed and cannot be used for some reasone); the apt in house #2 is being freshly redone but has a lot of unfinished business, e.g. an overgrown backyard that needs to be cleared, and sits on a hilly road with yet more stairs leading up to the house. Wondering if I'm overthinking the outside environment or whether I should consider this strongly when selecting a place to live. Any guidance appreciated.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 17 months ago

Anna, it sounds like your apartment has an irregular floorplan, so it might be easier to try to apply this chart to each room instead of the whole apartment. As for the entrance issues, try hanging a windchime or crystal ball as well as placing a leafy plant on the outside of your front door to protect the house from the chaotic rush of chi from the traffic and staircase.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 17 months ago

Lissayoga, the apt in house # 1 sounds like a good option. Some people might see doors that cannot be opened as a symbol of unexplored opportunities, but that's not necessarily true. To me, it sounds like a very minor feng shui problem. I wouldn't choose the apt in the building because the the train and parking lot beneath it can create too much chaotic and negative chi. As for the apt in house #2, it might not be too bad if you have time to take good care of the backyard, and if there are other buildings nearby the house. However, if the house stands alone on top of the hill, it means it is unprotected and your luck could drain downhill.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Hi Nima:

Yes, from a feng shui perspective, cracked or chipped glass can bring bad luck. You should replace it.

Hang a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door. And try to keep the door closed all the time.

The foot of your bed should not point directly to any doors. So you should change the position of your bed or place a piece of furniture (bookcase, small bench, ottoman, etc) somewhere between the foot of the bed and those doors.

If you can't take the computer out of the bedroom, cover it with a piece of fabric when you don't use it. Place it as far away from the bed as possible.

As for the bathroom in the wealth section, you can place a jar of pebbles, ceramic knickknacks, or little rocks in there. Or add anything that represents the earth element. It will help balance the chi and prevent your wealth luck from draining down the toilet. It's okay if your closet is also in your wealth section. Just keep it clean and organized. A bathroom with 2 entrances is also fine. Always keep both doors closed.

The front door that faces another door could create a negative energy, but it's not majorly bad. You can easily fix this by installing a screen door or a bead curtain. And the position of your desk is fine.

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 17 months ago

Deepali, there're a few different feng shui methods. Some feng shui gurus would suggest you find your gua number (calculated by your date of birth), which will help define your lucky/unlucky corners. In this article, I present a feng shui method called "aspirations of the bagua" which is more general and simple. It's up to you which method you prefer.

And it's ok to put feng shui coins on your wardrobe or anywhere else in your wealth corner. A wealth vase must have a narrow neck and a lid. Try an online feng shui store. I'm sure you'll find one. :)

Lumi, I'm sorry this simple bagua chart may not work with every floor plan. Try applying it to each room instead. And yes, you may hang a bagua mirror on the outside of your front door to protect the house from negative chi.

Hi, the main door of my home faces the main door of the opposite house. I heard that this is not so good. What can be done to ward of the negative affects due to this placement? Can a convex Bagua be placed here? Also the the kitchen and the toilet shares the same wall. What about this placement. Please help me out

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 16 months ago

Hi Sudhaa, you can hang a bagua mirror on the outside of your front door. As for having the kitchen next to the bathroom, it isn't necessarily bad. It could create negative chi only when your bathroom toilet or sink stands directly on the other side of the shared wall from your stove. If this is the case, you can fix it by painting the wall green or hanging a mirror above the stove.

Litlin 16 months ago

One side of my bed is next to the wall. I understand that there needs to have balanced space on both side of the bed but I can't seem to find a space to make it balance. Is that any remedy for this?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 16 months ago

Hi Litlin, it is ideal to keep the bed accessible on both sides, but the space on each side doesn't really need to be equal in size. To create a sense of balance, you can put a nightstand on each side of the bed. If you only have enough room for one nightstand, then place a tall vase or stack of decorative boxes on the other side, just so that the space won't look empty. :)

Hi Om!!

I really find this hub really informative & so easy to grasp..

My hubby & I are moving into this 1 BR flat that has a small entrance w/c faces a powder room (w/ 2 sinks)& a bathroom upon entering it (each room has a door separating it though) but i know I can't put a mirror on the powder room's door since it's the door opposite the main entrance it'll just ward off the CHI. Just right outside of the Main entrance is a staircase. How will I attract the Chi to dwell in the foyer & spread out its positivity all throughout the flat? There's also 1 wall separating the kitchen from the bathroom.. Basically, the shower area's floor is just right next to the stove w/ only the wall separating them. Then there goes another wall towards my sister's room then another wall towards our room.. It's a straightforward floor plan that's why it's driving me nuts.. there's just a very small hall way leading towards those rooms. We're even taking into consideration a collapsible dining table 'coz the space is too constricted... PLEASE HELP...

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 16 months ago

Hi! Try hanging a crystal ball and placing a bushy plant somewhere near the front door. This will help spread the positive chi around the foyer area instead of letting it rush into the powder room and down the toilet. As for the bathroom/kitchen issue, you can fix it by hanging a mirror (doesn't have to be big) on the wall above the stove or (if possible) paint your kitchen walls green. Hope this helps. :)

LitLin 15 months ago

Thanks Om! I have tried to move my bed away from the wall. There is a small gap that allow me to move in and out now but I do not have any nightstand at all for both side as my bed now seem to be in almost the centre of the room. The back of my bed actally face the closet so I do not have any wall back for my bed.Is this kind of arrangement ok?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 15 months ago

That sounds okay. You don't really need to have a nightstand on each side of the bed if you think everything seems to be in good balance just the way it is. And if your bed has a solid headboard, it doesn't need to be against a wall. :)

What's the best location to place a peacock statue?

My apartment building is across the street from two churches. I can see both from my apartment. I read that it may not be a good to live across churches, temples, hospitals and cemetaries. Is this true? If yes, is there a remedy? Would appreciate feedback. Thanks

You should place a peacock statue in either the fame or relationship section of the apartment because this majestic bird symbolizes glory and love. I've heard that it's bad to live close to a cemetary, but churches or temples should be fine.

Hi jica, it seems like there's not much you can do about the location of the bed. Hanging a piece of fabric between the foot of the bed and the door as you've said earlier is a good idea. I also suggest you should place a mirror on the outside of your bathroom door so that you can symbolically make the bathroom disappear. Hanging a crystal or picture of fish in the career section will enhance your wealth/career luck as well. Good luck! :)

Since your carpet is red, there's a lot of yang energy in the room. So I suggest you use blue fabric to balance that. (Also, blue is supposed to enhance your career luck!) You can put a picture of you and your bf in the bathroom if you want, but you should also place objects that represent the earth or wood element in the bathroom, such as little pebbles, rocks, a vase of flowers, a little indoor plant, etc. These elements may be able to counteract the strong water element of the bathroom, and prevent your luck from draining down the toilet so fast.

Hi,

I have just started learning about feng shui and would really appreciate your advice. I live in an apartment and if I place the bagua square so that the bottom line runs along my front door then my whole kitchen and half of my bathroom are completly off the map. Do I stretch the map so that they are included? this would mean that the base of the map is set back from the front door...which I am not sure is right however the kitchen is too big just to be counted as an extended area. I am confused help please! :) xx

Yes, that's fine. You can put a mirror anywhere in the house, except the bedroom. It helps bounce the chi or life force around, makes the place more lively and eliminates stagnation of the chi.

Hi OM,

I am hoping you could help me. I am considering to rent an apartment facing a very busy street. All windows come out to traffic going in both directions. The entrance door faces the elevator directly. It is on the 2nd floor. I like the place, but I need to make sure that if I sign the lease, I am not causing any harm to my life. I am single and want to increase my success and personal life luck, so everything matters to me. Thank you in advance!

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 13 months ago

Hi Maria, the busy street is not a big problem since your door does not face it directly. But having an elevator right in front of the entrance door is a no-no! Too much rushing chi, too much chaos. If you really want to rent this place, ask the manager whether you're allowed to place a bagua mirror on the outside of the door. This will ward off the negative chi from the elevator. If his answer is no, you'd better look for another apartment.

Hi Om,

I am very hoping you could help me. I am familiar with Feng Shui Philosophy a little bit and I tried to used wherever I lieved. But recently I moved to a very old, however very cute small house and I never had this kind of situation. The major problem is my front door faces a door from an external storage room ( is opposite to the main door). This external storage room has been added later to this house and now is connected with it. I can't changed position of any of these doors 'cause I am only renting this place. And the other thing is my front door faces a window inside a house. I am just about to hang a crystal close to window,on the line door - window, but I am not quite sure what about my front door from outside. Can you please tell me can I hang Bacqua mirror on my front door from outside? Hope you can help me and Thank you so much for reading this:)

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 13 months ago

Hi Marta, you don't need to worry about the location of the window. If you want to hang a crystal near the window, that's fine. However, it's not good at all that your front door directly faces the storage-room door. The storage room has a lot of stagnant chi. You don't want to bring that type of chi into your house. Some feng shui practitioners might choose to hang a bagua mirror on the outside of the front door, but I think a wind chime can be very effective as well in this case. It's supposed to promote the flow of positive chi and prevent negative chi from entering.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 12 months ago

Hi, Donna. Thanks for stopping by. The reason why the bathroom is considered such a bad feng shui area is that it has a tremendous water element that can drain all your luck. To fix that, place something that represents the wood or earth element in your bathroom. It could be a small potted plant, jar of pebbles, a miniature zen garden or you can just paint the walls green. Also, hang a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door.

Nancy 12 months ago

Hi Om,

Your hub is very informative and helpful. My apartment is on the main level of the building. When I look out my door, straight ahead I see the staircase leading to the upper floors (there are 6), the elevator is to the right and an exit door to the left across the elevator. All in my view but about 10 feet away from my door. There are apartments on either side of mine. In spite of all of this, once I am inside my apartment, I barely hear much activity although I am quite sure there is since its the only way for the people living above to enter and exit. I am unable to put a bagua mirror but have put above my door, a small convex mirror (with black frame) which I bought from an auto supply store. You have advised people to put a leafy plant or crystal or wind chime outside the door but my building is very strict. They will not allow it. Is the convex mirror good enough? Is there anything I can put on the door on the inside rather than outside? Please help. Thank you

Hi, Nancy. A simple convex mirror isn't an ideal fix, but a good enough substitute. There's no need to hang anything on the inside of the door. :)

Hi, Alexi. These are a few things you can do:

- Always keep the toilet seat, washing machine, as well as the doors to these rooms closed when you're not using them.

- Make sure nothing is leaking.

- Hang a mirror (just a normal mirror, NOT a bagua mirror) on the outside of the bathroom and laundry room doors.

- Place decorative items that represent the earth or wood element in your bathroom (little pebbles, rocks, small plant, green rug, painting of trees, etc).

As for the kitchen, there's no need to do anything about it except keeping everything clean and organized. Hanging a crystal in the kitchen or placing a mirror near the stove might be a good idea, though. :)

I am excited because it feels good and finally, after 5 years of living in clutter places there is no clutter in the bedroom (not even under the bed! :)) In our LIVING room we have a huge window with a balcony door where the fame area is and there is a huge mirror in our relationship area (floor to ceiling. one can see the water and yachts and trees in it, as we live at the bay) We plan on setting a dining table in this corner.... Hi, Jade. It sounds like you have a lovely home. You can see the bay from your window? I'm so jealous! Well, to enhance your wealth luck, maybe you should consider placing a little aquarium or mini fountain in the wealth section. A chipped mirror could bring bad luck so you should replace it. If you can't remove the mirror from your bedroom, just place a screen or hang a fabric between your bed and the mirror for a quick fix. And you also have a TV in your bedroom? That's not recommended. But since your husband loves to have it there, I suggest you cover it after it's turned off. Good luck. :)

Alexi 12 months ago

Hi Om, thank you for your advice. Re hanging a mirror - will a small mirror do or should it be a full body size mirror?

I have another question, if you don't mind. I have a ceiling fan inside the bedroom. I leave in an apt and cannot remove it or move my bed also. I cannot put a canopy also. What else can I do to make the bedroom good feng shui.

Thanks for your help.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Hi, Alexi. Yes, a small mirror will work just fine. And as for your ceiling fan issue, try hanging a crystal ball somewhere near the bed. It's not an ideal fix, but since you can't remove the fan, reposition the bed or install a canopy, this is the only feng shui cure I can think of. A crystal ball is supposed to neutralize the bad chi or diffuse the excessive yang energy from the fan.

Hi, Anna. The mentor area isn't a bad place to put your desk so you don't have to worry about that. alex 11 months ago

Hi Om,

I'm finding this hub really useful as I see many others have as well. I live in a small studio apartment which is thankfully very bright and located on a high floor very near the ocean. Additionally, the layout is very close to the Bagua floor plan and I naturally placed my furniture accordingly.

After reading your comments just now I was able to make some further, hopefully beneficial, adjustments :) I just have a few questions regarding how best to work out the following issues (which are due to how I placed some furniture/objects in order to best maximize my space):

1) my bed is where my career section is (with a wall at the head running only the length of my 'bed head' and separating me from the entrance space). I have experienced a lot of stagnation in my career since moving into the place (and cant really place the bed anywhere else or put a curtain between the bed and the rest of the apartment). I have been able to put a small nightstand which 'separates' the bed from the floor space and according to your suggestions plan on buying a small plant (without thorns) to set upon it. Also, I used to fall asleep with my laptop a lot and now I see that I should keep it as far away from my bed as possible (which I naturally have been doing lately by setting it on an opposing bookshelf (not directly opposite the bed but on the opposite wall) before getting into bed. Is there anything else I can do to enhance my job search success?

2) I happen to have recently created a spiritual corner in the mentor section (my live-in boyfriend just moved out post break up so I have more space and another bedside-like table fits perfectly there and not really anywhere else). I also happen to have bought a large Cymbidium Orchid plant which I placed on it, in addition to a photo of my inspirational (and living) mother and a print of an artist's metaphysical print essentially evoking the cycle of life and death and the unified spirit of the universe.

I plan on meditating facing this table as often as possible. As such... a free standing lamp is placed to the left of the table (and plant), illuminating the corner, and in accord with your suggestions I plan on hanging a crystal on it.

Any other suggestions here?

3) I happen to have recently met the man I am sure I will marry and couldn't be happier in the relationship section of my life. To ensure longevity and good vibes I have placed a red 'tea candle' holder on the round table there and a sea shell he collected with and for me on a diving trip together.

A persian miniature frame depicting lovers was previously place there and now must hang on the wall to ensure that wall's balance ...I just moved it today so perhaps it even encouraged the meeting of my soul mate! To replace it, I added to the table a picture frame holding a photo of me with my best girlfriend (since it's already in the only other frame I have and I don't yet have a hard copy photo of my love and I together).

After reading the suggestions here, I also added an antique object, hanging it by a piece for string from another free standing corner lamp next to the table (it is a small wooden frame with doors that open to a foggy mirror inside, measuring about 2 by 3 inches...I've left the doors closed as per your suggestion to avoid foggy mirrors and also because on the front of each door is painted a lover...which I thought would add the element of something in a pair as suggested). I was thinking that perhaps I could even print out a photo of me with my love and add it inside the doors, covering the mirror but also being covered by the wooden doors much like a locket. Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

Also, I have 2 orchid plants not currently in bloom, which went neglected for a while when I was out of town and which I've recently started caring for again in the hopes they will bloom eventually again, albeit probably several months from now...they're currently situated on this table and I'm wondering if they should ideally be moved?

4) There's no room to put anything in the free space at the centre of the room or any outlet in the centre of the ceiling from which to hang a chandelier... I'm inclined to leave it that way but am wondering whether it would perhaps be best to attach something small like a crystal to the ceiling? It should be noted that it is the centre space of the main room/space of the apartment... the kitchen and bathroom go off to the left of the entrance hall.. kitchen back left, bathroom back right (separated by a closet/sink/small hallway space that extends from the foyer area although is separated by a door...and the bathroom with toilet/bath/shower is further separated from the areas by a sliding door and to the back left further).

5) In terms of the bathroom, is there anything you would recommend hanging from the walls in any particular place? The toilet faces the entrance to the bthrm. I've placed a tray with candle, matches and oil diffuser on the back of it as well as having placed some funny cartoons on the walls. Not room for much else..

6) In the wealth section (far left corner of my kitchen) I only have room for 2 beautiful old antique prints. There is also a small counter space on which I could place a jar along the lines that you have described..but I'm wondering whether I could simply tape coins to the back of my prints instead (also do these coins need to be i-ching coins or can they be any coin in general...and what is an i-ching coin??).

Additionally, could you please tell me what I should put in a jar/how to situate and/or cover it if the taping is not ideal/ I need but cant find an i-ching coin?

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for your time. I look forward to hearing from you!!!

alex 11 months ago

Oops...just a quick amendment..I noticed that in point number 4 I indicated that my 'kitchen is back left and bathroom back right' when in fact its the opposite and my bathroom is thankfully not situated in the wealth sector of the Bagua chart (rather, the kitchen is and the place I have room to place my wealth objects is in fact the furthest left point of the floor plan as recommended). Just wanted to make that clear! Thanks again :)

alex 11 months ago

ps...Just a couple more things I thought of while getting ready for bed...

1) a) is there any significance to having a trash bin (without a lid) located under my nightstand (with glass top) or anywhere else in an apartment/ room? As I mentioned in my earlier post I am really trying to get a move on with my career and the bed is (immovably) located in the Bagua career section along with my nightstand, so I'd like to avoid all possible bad energy there v) with regards to trash in general, I've heard that having old trash in the apartment just promotes bad chi flow and I adhere to this thought but its hard to empty the trash so frequently as I like to wait until a trash bag is full so as not to waste it. Generally I take out the trash once or twice a week max. Any thoughts on this?

2) regarding the computer situation I own a laptop which I previously mentioned is placed on a shelf lining the wall opposite my bed (but not directly opposite it) before I go to bed at night. Is it best to turn it off and/ or cover it before bed if I should continue with a preference to place it there?

THANKS again, so much!

Hi Alex,

It seems like you have already been "feng-shuiing" your place pretty nicely. But let me see if I can help you improve it.

- To enhance your career luck, maybe you should place a little potted plant near your bed or decorate this area with the color green to symbolize growth or rebirth. Typically, a windchime would be good for the career section. BUT since you have your bed there, a windchime is not advisable.

- Creating a little shrine in the mentor section is great. And everything you described sounds perfect. So I have no further suggestions for this area.

- No need to remove the orchid plants unless they're dying. You don't really need blooming flowers to enhance your romance luck. As long as the plants are healthy, they're fine. In fact, serious feng shui practitioners would likely decorate the relationship section with peony plants rather than orchids. The peony is believed to symbolize love whereas the orchid represents spiritual purity. But personally, I think it's okay to place orchids there.

- Yes, hanging a crystal in the central area would be very auspicious.

- Don't glamorize the bathroom too much. If you want to hang something on the wall, choose a picture of trees or flowers. You should also accessorize the room with green rugs and towels. Green represents the wood element, which will counteract the strong water element of the bathroom.

- I-ching coins are gold coins for reading of the i-ching (an art of fortune telling). In a feng shui store, you'll usually find 3 of them bound together with a red thread. Actually, scroll back up to the paragraph where I discuss the wealth section and you'll find a picture of i-ching coins (Amazon product) next to it. To decorate your wealth area, you can either hang them on the wall or place them in a jar.

- A trash can won't promote bad chi. You don't need to worry about it.

- And yes, you should turn off and close your laptop when you go to bed. Keep it somewhere out of sight, far away from the bed.

Hi Om,

First off I love that you give feng shui advice to the many of us living in aparment or studios. I live in a studio that is a little under 400 sq. feet I want to have better luck and hopefully have a boyfriend one day soon as I am not having such luck in dating. My relationship corner(sw) is a cramped corner by the door and I have my coat stand and boots in that corner. How do I enhance that?

Next to that is a cramped small South area (fame) this is where my huge ornate mirror is against the wall which is smushed against the SE corner where my closet is I decorated that area with mardi gras beads of red, green, purple on that corner where my ornate mirror is - hopefully blending prosperity with the fame section. then the hallway goes to the kitchen which is center. I am think of getting a fauceted yellow ball for the middle kitchen area. What do you think of that?

I also have little corners like in my kitchen there is a little SE corner where above the cabinets I place all my wines and oils. The SW is the microwave and I placed the salt and pepper on top of that.

I am also not having luck with some co-workers too so please help me in trying to fix that too. I really need good luck here and not the drama. I recently bought a chyrssanthemum plant and placed it in the farthest NE corner and my cross with milagros is in that corner. what else may I add there for peace/happiness/growth with the people I work with?

My carrer is tiny area North which is really just a window - I decorated it with a salmon charm haning at the window and a little stained glass with fishes and a boat in the picture.

Now my bedroom is in a weird place the NE which is the knowledge area. I want to constantly gain knowledge but also attract a mate. I have just bought a black and white picture of a couple kissing and want to put it up on the NE wall? What can I do to work the knowledge area and at the same time attract a mate?

Also my ornate floor mirror that I mentioned above it reflects my hallway going to the kitchen and balcony door is that okay? I read that if the mirror faces the front door would be a bad thing but not the balcony door?

Thank you so much Om!

Hi Om,

Thanks soo much for your helpful response. I just have a few follow up questions if that's OK.

1) In terms of the relationship section, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the small, antique, wooden framed mirror I described in my earlier post...specifically whether you would recommend putting a photo of me and my loved one between the foggy mirror and the wooden doors which currently hide the foggy mirror, much like a locket? And whether, if I do place a photo of us there, it would be OK or even recommended to have the doors open (basically I am wondering what the significance would be to having the foggy mirror exposed via the doors being open but concealed by the photo)?

2) In terms of the crystal I should hang from the ceiling at the center of the room, I'm thinking that I can only afford to place a small crystal hanging from a small piece of string taped to the ceiling. Is the shape of the crystal important (ie can it be an oval shape or must it necessarily be circular?

3) In terms of the bathroom, would it be ok to hang two prints of cartoons (which actually feature my deceased father who worked in advertising) instead of flower/plant prints (I don't have any). If you would specifically not recommend putting these here, is there any other sector they would work better/best (like mentor section)?

Also, I cant buy a whole new set green towels at the moment so Im wondering whether even just one green hand towel would make a difference? And I noticed that some other posts contained recommendations to put a jar containing earth elements like stones or a plant/flowers in the bathroom...would this be advisable in my case at all (as in, is this generally advisable or only in certain instances)?

4) I have seen the I-ching coin before it seems, but as I am especially low on funds at the moment, I am curious as to whether any old coin, of any currency, would be at all effective...and whether I could tape whichever coin recommended to the back of an antique print hanging on the wall, or whether they must be placed in plain sight (ie hung from the wall or placed in a jar as recommended in your response)?

5) As you suggested, I am now turning off and closing my laptop when I go to bed and keeping it somewhere out of sight, far away from the bed. Im just curious as to the significance of doing otherwise?

Many, many thanks again!!

Hi, Liza. Thanks for visiting my hub. Here are some suggestions I have for you.

- Try to uncramp your relationship corner. Maybe you should place the coat stand somewhere else and put a small potted plant there instead. When you're looking for a new relationship, it means you should have "space" for a new person to enter and be in your life. Based on feng shui, you should create a symbolic space for that, instead of filling up the area with your own stuff. Also, try to keep this area look well-lit and not gloomy.

- The way you decorate your fame and wealth sections are good already. But having the mirror facing the balcony might be a little problem. It could reflect the chi that comes in from the balcony to go right out. So to fix this, place a crystal somewhere between the mirror and balcony door, or accessorize the balcony door with a bead curtain. Crystal balls or beads tend to absorb and spread the chi around the room.

- To promote peace and growth in your life, look around the room and see if there're any sharp corners (square/rectangular pieces of furniture or protruding wall corners, etc). You may put a fabric on top of a square table or slightly reposition it in a way that none of the corners will point to where you sleep or usually sit. Or you could place a plant or floor lamp in front of a protruding wall corner to make it "disappear."

- It's ok to place a picture of lovers near your bed to enhance your romance luck. To also promote knowledge and wisdom, try to decorate the area with the color blue, green, black or gold.

@ Alex

- Yes, if your photo completely conceals the mirror, it's ok to leave that door open.

- The size of the crystal doesn't really matter. The circular shape is supposed to be more auspicious. But the oval is fine too.

- Yes, you may decorate your bathroom with jars of pebbles or vases of flowers as well. And feel free to hang up your cartoon prints instead of flower prints. They won't create bad energy or bad luck. The reason I suggested that you hang up pictures of plants or flowers was because they represent the wood and earth element which will counteract the overwhelming water element of the bathroom. But cartoons are fine; they will not worsen the feng shui of the room.

- Honestly, I'm not sure whether normal coins would work or not. You could also decorate the area with any metalic objects that you already have, though.

- Laptops contain a lot of yang energy, which could lead to a restless sleep. That's all. It won't bring bad luck or anything like that.

Hi Om,

Its me again. I was reading about the crytal and the different sizes and colors. Does the size of the crystal really matter and what would you recommend as the best color for my situation? I read about the black crystal -helps with money and careers as well as protection and since my mirror is in the fame/weatlh section looking into the kitchen to the balcony door would that be a good one to have or does another color help any better?? Pink, yellow, clear???

Thanks again!

Hi Om, thanks again for your help/advice.

Is a walking closet part of the bedroom? Like my bedroom is in the wealth section of the bagua. Should I include the walking closet as part of the bedroom? I've read re enhancing the wealth section to place like piggy bank in the extreme left part of the bedroom. That's why I'm asking if the walking closet is part of the bedroom. Thank you so much.

Liza 11 months ago

Okay, this should be my final question if that is okay. I still have a question about the size and color of the crystal. Which color would be best for my situation? Also what if the crystal is not real does that make a difference? Lastly what about a small windchime between the balcony door and mirror in the hallway would that help deter the bad chi too? I found a small windchime with a fake crystal and another one with an decorative amythest stone at the market and was thinking I should ask you first. If so which would be better the fake crystal or amythest attached to the windchime?

Many, many Thanks again!

@Lisa

The size of the crystal doesn't really matter. The colors that are good for your career and wealth luck include black, red, purple and gold. Hanging a windchime in that area won't be a bad idea. Artificial crystals won't be able to disperse stagnant chi and create positive energy as well as real ones, though. So the one with amethyst stones will be a better choice.

Does your bathroom toilet or sink stand directly on the other side of the shared wall from your stove? If the answer is yes, you should hang a mirror above the stove or decorate the wall with green paintings or green objects. If not, you don't have to worry about it.

Although you can't put all that stuff somewhere else, you can try to keep it as organized as possible. Don't keep too many things in one area; try to create a sense of balance and allow the energy to flow throughout the room. If you don't have and don't want to buy feng shui items, try decorating the wealth section of your room with metal objects that you already have.

Dear Om,

I recently signed up for an apartment. I am really confused. I am yet to move in.

Here is the problem. I tried to apply Vaastu principles and feng shui and am totally confused.

Now I am thinking of not moving in and your timely help will be appreciated.

The way it stands, the apartment is a maisonette above a wine shop. The entrance or the face of the house is facing West.

I will be occupying the space above the wine shop and the floor above it( ie first floor and the 2nd floor). The block is regular square.

The ground floor is the wine shop at the bottom left ( most of it). The entrance to the apartment is on the bottom right ( where the mentor section) of the Pa-gua map is. The door is black in color.

As I enter, there is a flight of stairs leading to the upper level, which is my apartment. The first landing of the stairs is on the bathroom. So as I enter, I see stairs and the bathroom on the top of the stairs.

Will this cause any problem to wealth, health career.

Or should I look for another apartment?

Thanks

KK.

Hi KK,

It is not ideal to have a bathroom facing the staircase/entrance directly. But you can fix this bad feng shui by keeping the bathroom door closed and placing a leafy plant at the bottom of the staircase to absorb and spread the chi around instead of allowing it to rush up the stairs and down the toilet. Hope this helps. :)

Hi there - I currently live in a two level condo and I am not sure how to place the bagua map to get a correct reading.Upon entering the front door the entryway is very small and cramped(4x7)and faces a pony wall. From this entryway landing exists 2 staircases. One leads up to the upper level of the condo and the second set of stairs leads down to the lower level.Do I place the bagua map at my front door or do I place the map at the top and bottom sets of stairs? Also, both staircases lead to a closet door. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 8 months ago

I understand this map might not be applicable for all types of floor plans. Since your condo has 2 stories, I think it would be easier to apply this map to each level separately. So yeah, for the top level, you could consider the top of the staircase to be the entrance. And for the bottom level, consider the staircase landing to be the entrance. As for your other question, closets usually contain a lot of stagnant chi, which could affect the positive chi coming through the staircases. To fix this, place a crystal, indoor potted plant or auspicious paintings between the end of each staircase and closet. Hope this helps. :)

Great hub! I really believe that fengshui affects our life. Years ago, while I was renting a room, I almost had bad dreams every night. Thus, I would feel tired and find it hard to concentrate the next day. I then tried to lookup the internet about room fengshui. It's amazing yet very true. The site which I found mentioned that it is not good to sleep in a bed positioned directly behind a toilet bowl. When position the bed, do not position it under a beam. Unfortunately, my bed was directly behind a toilet bowl and there was a long beam across the room which was quite impossible to miss no matter how I positioned my bed. Since reading the article, I positioned my bed to the best possible space in the room and I haven't had that many nightmares during my time in that room.

Ana 7 months ago

Hi Om, this is such a great site! I rent a room in a house (I guess what the British would call a bedsit), so my feng shui chances are even slimmer than in an apartment. The house was unoccupied for 2 years and the front landscaping was never looked after, so it's very weedy. I have no time or energy to do it myself (I'm not required to). I'm an older woman working a very physically-intense factory job (I lost my proper job last summer and can't find anything else). Also, I clean inside for a slight rent discount I desperately need. There are 2 other renters. We're the only people living here so there's no owner or family on site. The owner's nephew who collects the rent and manages things lives in an apartment in the basement. So it's kind of a free and easy atmosphere, and my room is fairly spacious although not very large.

I have no idea what direction the house front door faces, but no one uses it anyway. We use another front door on the left front, which opens into the kitchen which has windows on the other side that are always open. There is no back door. There's a sunroom in front, jutted out somewhat so there have to be parts missing from the bagua.

I hope I can get results using just my room for feng shui. I have little to no control over anything else. I can't move at present.

My room entrance opens out into a tiny hallway with 3 doors kind of in a semicircle. Directly across is the bathroom. I now keep that door closed, but the other renter who uses it leaves it open. Should I keep closing it? The other doors are another renter's room, very close to my own (I'm the only female), and a closet we use only to store the air conditioners in winter.

In the Black Hat school, my room door opens to the Mentors sector on the right and since it's a wall by the door, I can't put anything there. My bed's bookcase headboard is in the Creativity/Children sector and the bed juts out from there to the center. Currently, my family pictures are in its bookcase, above my head as I sleep, along with some novels, decorative items and beauty supplies.

There's a ceiling fan in the middle, right over my feet when I'm in bed. The bed has drawers underneath. I have to use them because I can't afford a bureau or any other furniture. Because of those drawers, the only place I can move the bed is along the wall opposite the door, where there's a window, in the Fame and Relationship sectors. But you said not to put beds by a wall and most definitely not by a window. I have no choice, and it would add nicely to space so I can eventually put a small sofa somewhere, probably in either the Creativity/Children sector, or the Career sector where my small TV currently is. From those areas I won't be able to see the door from my sofa, though, without turning my head.

My window air conditioner, vital because the house is so hot, is in the Family sector so my family pictures can't go anywhere there. My desk and computer are in the Wealth sector. I currently have a crystal on the desk and a silver-colored picture frame with the names of countries around the world. I'll put 4 of my favorite travel pictures there, ones that look "rich." To me, wealth represents freedom and travel, so I felt that was very appropriate -- although I don't think metal is the proper element in the Wealth area, is it? I'm completely financially ruined and stuck, so at the moment wealth is my absolute priority.

The corner opposite on my left side, as I sit at my desk (the far left of the entrance) is the Knowledge sector, where my closet is. There's a full-length mirror there. The closet is very small and fits only my clothes and suitcases. Suggestions -- especially for wealth, career, and maybe for the Creativity sector, too, since I'm writing a book -- are most welcome! :-) Thank you!

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 7 months ago

Hi, Ana. Thanks for visiting my hub. Let's start with your bed. It's actually okay if you put your bed by a wall as long as the head of your bed isn't right under the window. To write a book or do something creative, it's important that you make your room look as spacious as possible. This symbolic space is supposed to help your creativity and words flow more freely. Decorating the desk area with travel pictures is a great idea. As an artist or a writer, it's wise to surround yourself with pictures or objects that inspire you. Another good thing to put on your desk is a vase of fresh or artficial flowers. Yellow or orange ones are the best, as these colors symbolize clarity, optimism and wisdom. The metal element is actually great for the wealth section. Feng shui practitioners like to hang up gold coins or put metal figurines in this area. One more thing: don't position your desk in a way that prohibits you from seeing the door. When you sit at your desk, you should be able to have a perfect scope of vision of the entire room. This symbolic scope is supposed to help broaden your perception and put you in full command of your own future. Oh and yes, try to keep the bathroom door closed. :)

My bedroom is at the front and leftmost part of the floor plan (knowledge) and when I leave my bedroom, it opens up to a hall way in which my bathroom is at my left and the entrance to my apartment is at the right so where the heck is my career section? Yeah, I know this map doesn't work for all floor plans. Try applying it to each room instead of the whole apartment. Don't worry about the bathroom door. Just keep the toilet seat closed when you're not using it. And maybe you should try to decorate the bathroom with the color green or objects that represent the wood and earth element.

Deborah 6 months ago

Hi Om, I hope you dont mind me asking but I can't seem to find an answer to my question about mirror placement in my home. My front door opens up to a large reception area, to walk into the main part of the house you walk through a wide doorway that has an optional glass and wood slider that you use to close off the space. We only close the slider if we have company and night and the kids are asleep upstairs. On the other side of the room we have an area that has our wooden dining table. You can see half of the dining room area from the front door when you walk in but is a long way away. I wanted to put a rectangular mirror (incased in natural wood) on the wall behind the dining table. This will mean that you will be able to see half of the mirror when you walk in the front door. With this being in another room to the entrance way (and able to be closed off at will) would this be good or bag feng shui? Thanks so much for you advice in advance.

Hi, Jas. Thanks for stopping by. What you've heard about the mirror placement is correct. You should put it somewhere else. It shouldn't face the entrance directly. Thank you for the advise on career section. I have done as advised. But Please help me with the mirror I am not sure where I should place in the house. I have narrow dining room. I plan to either hang on one of the walls that faces wall on the other side. I can hang a painting opposite it (what kind of painting should I hang)......

Or, I should hang it in living room, on rt side of main entrance facing another wall ( I have hung white Tara there - which I plan to move to end passage - the spiritual corner). I plan to hang gold dragon painting with red background in its place - thus the mirror will reflect that painting in living room.

What do you recommend Om - should I place mirror in a) dining area; b) living room; c) in living room should it face White Tara or red Dragon..............

Hi Om,

Great hub! I always had questions about feng shui interior, and I didn't know where to find answers, I learned a lot from this.

I live in a rented maisonette, (2 blocks away from a cemetary) no view to it - don't know how bad this is , and how it will affect.

As you enter the house, in front of the main door there is a staircaise going up to the rooms. I put a blue painting arriving upstairs but I am not sure that this is the right color.

I also took out the mirror from our bedrooms and put it in the hallway is that ok?

My sons room, I had his bed in the career area but it was behind the door and so I moved it to the fame area which I put a horse painting, all his creations ( mostly fire) and trophies there. In the relationship area there is a cupboard, and no space in the mentor area to put his desk so I had to put it on the wealth area. How will this affect him?

I also have a small baby in a crib. It is in my room, but i had to put it right in front of the entrance of the room, and right outside the rooms door is the staircase. I keep the door closed when we sleep, is there anything else to do?

Thank you in advance for your time.

@xionati - Being 2 blocks away from the cemetery isn't that bad. As long as your house is not right next to it or facing it, I don't think it will be able bring negative chi to you. The location of the blue pianting is fine, but I suggest you also place a bushy potted plant or hang a crystal near the bottom of the staircase. This way the chi won't rush upstairs too quickly. I think everything about your son's room sounds great. As for the crib, is it possible to put it somewhere else...somewhere away from the door? I don't think it's a good spot for the baby to sleep....just too much chi coming in.

If I put the crib at the other side of my bed there will be a window next to it and the bathroom door in front of it. Is that better ? In the other bedrooms there is no space, but in front of the door.

Yes, you may place the crib near the window instead, as long as the head of the crib is not right under the window, and the foot of the crib doesn't directly point to the bathroom.

Hi Is it ok if u place the mirror opposite the entrance door? If not then why?

sasha 4 months ago

Om thanks for the good work, i have some questions, would be really happy if you could sort out:

1. My wealth/ power sector is in the balcony(where i keep my wardrobe with empty suitcases and junk), i have all the broom sticks and cleaning equipments too kept in this sector...what should i do?

2.My stove is in the northwest (i cant move as we have pipe connection)

3. i have been wanting to shift from this apartment(its a 1 bedroom) but never seems possible

4.My other balcony is in the fame sector (i have decorated with green plants...is that ok?)

please help

@Kavita - It's not recommended because the mirror will send the chi right back out of the door.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 4 months ago

@Sasha - Hi. A wardrobe or closet contains a lot of stagnant chi so it's not ideal to be located in the wealth section of the house. I suggest you should try to keep it very organized and try not to overstuff it. Instead, there should be some empty space in the wardrobe so that there's room for new chi to come in and flow more freely. Everything else sounds okay. :)

Hi Om,

I've been going through a really turbulant phase in my marriage. My husband and I are separated for now (though I wanna get back with him as I love him a lot). I needed to know if there is anything I could do Feng Shui wise (while I'm living away from him) that could help improve our situation (and eventually get us back together).

WOuld appreciate your help! Thanks.

@Sasha - Thanks a lot.

@Payal - Ummmm....I'm not sure what "tea pink" looks like. But pink is considered a yin color, so it should help create a relaxing atmosphere in your living room.

@angeleyes - Feng shui practioners believe that there're ways to improve our romance luck, such as decorating our place with items that come in a pair, hanging a picture of mandarin ducks, or putting a peony plant in the relationship area of the house. However, I will not go so far as to say that these methods will help you and your husband get back together for sure.

Alex 4 months ago

Hi OM! Im back and I have a whole new set of questions as I am moving into a new apartment with my new (and Im very sure to be 'permanent' :) boyfriend. I hope you can help me with some specific queries and any other helpful tips you might have.

Firstly, Im trying to figure out how to feng shui my new place according to the bagua chart and am wondering: when it says entrance, whether it means that the opening of the main entrance is leading into the knowledge section or whether it just refers to the general location of the entrance (and thus when one goes through the front door they are in fact facing what should be the career section)? Because the floor plan of my apartment is rectangular (roughly following the rectangular layout of the bagua chart) but when one enters, although technically stepping into the career section, in reality one faces a wall with an electrical box visible (I would like to put a mirror here but I know its not a good idea so I guess Ill have to come up with a print to cover it at some point). To the immediate right of the entranceway is a wall (which forms a right angle with the wall of the electrical box). We have a large floor to ceiling mirror which we would like to prop up here. Please advise.

I will now describe the rest of the apartment (a one bedroom) so you can get a feel for the place:

Turning left from the doorway (and away from the right angle corner described above), one goes down a hallway. There is a storage closet built into the wall along this hallway and several feet to the left of the doorway. Immediately thereafter one finds the kitchen entrance. The kitchen is square shaped and the wall to the right, upon entering, ends right above the sink to double as a bar on the opposite side. This bar forms one of the short sides of the long, rectangular living/dining area (the opposite short side of which is all floor to ceiling windows). So you see the entrance hallway ultimately leads into this living space.

Going back to/starting from the actual entrance once again, there is an opening on the the right (facing the storage closet next to the opening of kitchen) which leads into a smaller hallway, parallel to the main one described. Upon entering this smaller hallway, one finds a storage closet (which doubles as a laundry facility) to the immediate right. If one keeps walking straight past this storage/laundry closet, one walks into a powder room with toilet and sink. Going left away form this corner formed by the powder room/ closet right angle, one steps through the threshold of the bedroom but does not see the main area of the room right away. Rather, the door of the ensuite bathroom (with bath, shower, sink, toilet) is to the immediate right past this threshold.

Exiting this ensuite bathroom and going right, one will then enter the bedroom area which is rather small. Facing the room from this vantage point, one sees the queen bed to the right, centered on the wall to the far right. There is just enough room for a night stand on either side (measuring about a foot and a half in width and length each), and there is no other space for the bed to situated. On the wall to the immediate right (so to the side of the bed), there are built in closets. On the wall facing the bed (and to the immediate left upon entering) I am thinking of placing a dresser where we currently have a flimsy desk in place (and thus removing/replacing the desk). There is also a leather bench we have placed at the foot of the bed. No room for much else. The wall facing you when you walk in (and thus opposite the wall full of built in cabinets on the opposite side of the bed) is all windows.

On the other side of these windows is a rectangular terrace and the windows comprise a sliding door which leads onto the terrace. There is another entrance/exit to the terrance on the left when u walk out of the bedroom entrance/exit (so on the wall that forms a right angle to the bedroom window wall). This second exit/entrance leads back into the living space I described earlier. Our circular dining table is currently near this entrance/exit to the living space, but I see from the bagua chart advice that I should move it as far away as possible from this location, across the room/ to the opposite wall/corner of the living room instead (these are the only two possible options in terms of situating the table as the center of the living room is occupied by a couch facing that opposite wall, and a bench along that wall facing the couch (tv mounted on wall above bench) and coffee table situated between the couch/ bench.

Now to sum up my questions:

1) my queries regarding the entrance area (please refer to the second paragraph)

2) regarding the bedroom, we were thinking of refitting the built in closet doors (which basically cover that entire described wall) with mirrors, both to open up the room and let in more light (as this wall is opposite the wall of windows) and for otherwise kinky purposes! I know that mirrors are not generally recommended in the bedroom, but I have read that the only mirror placement of real concern here is one situated opposite the bed (to avoid startling the spirit when it leaves your body at night and thus to avoid restless sleep). So, although probably unadvisable, would it be impossible to have the mirrors covering the wall to the side of the bed? What if I could drape a fabric over them at night? Or would a canopy bed do the trick? Although I have also heard that canopy beds are unadvisable in feng shui because they tend to promote depression and restlessness. What is your opinion on this?

3) also regarding the bedroom, is it essential for there to be space under the bed and/or to have a headboard? We still need a headboard and I cant remember whether there is space under the bed, so we could either buy a new bed frame with built in headboard or just a head board to attach separately. What do u recommend?

4) my query regarding which corner (of the two possible corners) in the living area would be best to place my circular dining room table

5) regarding the good luck center, this would fall at the end of the main hallway and at the beginning of the living area (forming the bottom right hand corner of the living space). I could place a crystal and/or religious symbol on the console table which is placed directly behind the couch....or simply rely on getting a chandelier to place over the light fixture which roughly hangs in this area. What do you recommend most?

6) Do you have any other tips or ideas regarding my floor plan to ensure prosperity, especially in terms of my career? For example, I realize that my powder room is in the mentors section but I am planning on hanging those cartoon prints made about my now deceased father there (you can find a further description of these in my old posts). Anything else I should be doing?

Thanks again so much for your time and advice :)

hi OM, one other question which I would like to add to my queries re our bedroom. In terms of the dresser I would like to purchase to place opposite the bed, would it be an absolute nono for this dresser to be a mirrored dresser (even if its only the height of a desk and not much higher than the bed itself)? Thanks!

Hi again, One last thing re the bedroom...is it better or in any way significant to have a footer (ie pice of furniture or part of a bedframe) at the bottom of the bed? Thanks!!

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 months ago

Hi Alex, it sounds like you just got a lovely new apartment. Sorry it took several days for me to reply. I was on a little vacation. Now I'm back and will try to answer all your questions.

- The "entrance" refers to the general location of the main front door. It doesn't matter whether it leads to the knowledge or metor areas.

- Placing a floor-to-ceiling mirror near the entrance is fine, as long as it doesn't face the entrance directly.

- It's okay to have a mirror in the bedroom, whether it be a dresser mirror or closet door mirror. Feng shui practioners believe that it might encourage infidelity and hurt your relationship, but I personally don't take such belief seriously. I think it could create too much yang energy and cause restless sleep, though. So if possible, drape a piece of fabric over it before you go to bed. A canopy bed is only recommended as a feng shui cure for having a skylight or ceiling fan right over the bed.

- Your bed doesn't need a headboard if you put it against a solid wall. A headboard is not at all a must-have. Having space under the bed, however, is highly recommended.

- The location where you want to move your dining table to sounds fine. There's nothing inauspisious about it.

- A chandelier is better, but a crystal or religious symbol will work just fine.

- I recommend that you add a vase of fresh flowers or a a potted plant in your career section. Make sure you change the flowers often. Never leave dry or withered flowers in the vase. Lily, lucky bamboo and iris are some good choices.

- Don't get a bed with a footboard or place the foot of your bed against a wall. It can cause stagnation in your career.

Ok.....I think that is all. Good luck! :)

Hi again Om!

Quick question about decoration.

I have a pair of silver omani knives to hung on a wall but I really dont know where it would be good to hung them. For the moment I have hidden them behind the door outside the guest toilet next to the cupboard with the coats.that falls into the Family section of my house.how good is that?

And something else, should the garage (which is connected with the rest of the house) be part of the bagua map?

Thank you so much!

We are planning to buy an apartment, n we are confused which floor to choose. Is there any specification regarding the floor number as per feng shui? whether the lower floors are better or shud we go for topmost ones ? pls help us out with ur advice.

@Xionati - Sharp objects, such as knives, are not something that feng shui practioners would normally use as a decorative item. So I suggest you tuck them away somewhere. It doesn't really matter where you keep them. As long as they're not on display, it's okay. And yes, you should include your garage as part of the map.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 months ago

@Vidya - No, it normally doesn't matter what floor you choose. BUT if there is a parking garage underground or at the bottom floor of the apartment building, you should live as high up above the garage as possible.

Hi, Shirley. There's no good place for the bathroom. In the old days, serious feng shui practioners would build a bathroom outside of their house! But of course, that wouldn't really be practical. I usually advise my readers to hang a mirror on the outside of their bathroom door to kind of make it "disappear." The smaller the bathroom, the better. Also, keep the decoration simple; don't glamorize it too much.

Hello, would you be able to give me some tips for my wealth area? Half of it is occupied by an outside storage room (attached to my deck, I'm on a 3rd floor apartment) and the other half of it is inside and occupied by a fireplace. This is one area of my and my fiance's life that we are struggling with. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thankyou!

Wow great advice to everyone!! Im a feng shui virgin so il have a go at your advice n if im stuck which i think i will be il have a few questions! I only just starting to look at it because im always really bad luck with money, and i just cant seem to save, tried saving plans and everything but every month something pops up and we need the money for something, im in debt aswel, well i suppose alot of people are but i would jus love to buy things i want for a change instead of need, thanks anyway, will be asking a few questions soon. Oh what if my entrance is the career section and its south of the apartment? The bathroom is next to the entrance on the left as you walk in and the open kitchen is on the right facing north? Which would be the knowledge career and mentor? Thanks

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 months ago

Hi, Katy. Having the fireplace in the wealth area is actually very good. As for the storage room, it contains a lot of stagnant energy so that is not very auspicious. I suggests you keep the storage area very organized and not too cramped. If there are too many things in there, take some stuff out so that there will be room for the chi to flow. Hanging a crystal outside of the storage room (doesn't have to be right outside the door...anywhere near it will be fine) can increase the amount of flowing chi in this area as well.

Hi, Debbie. It sounds like the knowledge section is your bathroom; the mentors section is your kitchen; and the career section the area your entrance leads to. If you have more questions, feel free to ask. I'm not a pro feng shui advisor, but I've studied feng shui for quite a few years.

Hi OM,

Thanks for your answers a couple weeks ago about my new apartment. Some things are still unclear to me however...could you possible give me a few more tips based on the following? It would be much appreciated.

1) Now that I have settled into my place, we have situated the dining table in the fame/relationship section instead of in the wealth family area and it cannot be placed elsewhere. Is this ok? If not, should anything be added to ameliorate the situation?

2) You advised that mirrors are ok in the bedroom but did not address whether having one opposite the bed is ok too...as I said in my last post, I have read that the only mirror placement of real concern here is one situated opposite the bed (to avoid startling the spirit when it leaves your body at night and thus to avoid restless sleep). So, although probably unadvisable, would it be impossible to have the mirrors covering the wall to the side of the bed? I know that they create yang energy so would be covering any mirrors before bed.

Also, with regard to the bedroom we do have space under the bed and a solid wall behind/at the head of the bed. I know you recommended not putting a footboard on the bed but we have a small chest at the foot of the bed which is lower than the height of the bed. Can this be left in place or would it be advisable to remove it?

3) in the middle of the apartment you suggested putting a religious symbol or crystal since I cant hang a chandelier...would a rosary suffice? and/or what kind of crytal could I place here? We just received a crustal in the shape of an oyster with a pearl in it so I could use that if that would suffice?

4) There is a bathroom in my mentors section where I am hanging cartoons of my late father and mentor. Anything else I can do in this bathroom?

5) You recommended adding a vase or potted flowers in my career section but I cant do this as there is only a wall leading into a hallway here, no real place for a table, although I suppose I could put a corner plant on the immediate right of the entrance...there is an enclosed laundry space too, ahead of the entrance, where I suppose I could place some bamboo inside the doors. What would be the best of these options?

6) our knowledge section is in the kitchen...anything I can put in the kitchen to help?

7) I have a bookshelf in my wealth section and that space leads into the family section which is the living space with couches, coffee table etc. Anything I can place on the bookshelf to enhance our wealth?

Thanks again and looking forward to hearing from you!

Best,

Alex

@clariza - This map is a basic feng shui strategy called "aspirations of the bagua." You can just apply it to you floorplan regardless of which directions your apartment is facing. So your wealth area is in the far left corner of the house. Since your dining table is in the middle of the house, it is in the "good luck center," and that's a good place to have a table decorated with lucky feng shui objects.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 months ago

@sheila - Yeah, you can hang any kind of charm on the inside of your door, EXCEPT the bagua mirror. The bagua mirror is supposed to keep negative energy from entering your house, so the only good place to put it is on the outside of your front door.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 months ago

@Alex - Hi, good to see you again. Here are my answers for you:

1. There's nothing wrong with having the dining table in the fame / relationship areas.

2. Yes, you can have a mirror opposite the bed. Not ideal but not awfully inauspicious either. It would help to reduce yang energy if you cover the mirror with a piece of fabric before going to bed, though. And it's also ok to place a small chest at the foot of your bed as long as it's not higher than the bed itself.

3. Yep, any lucky objects will be fine.

4. No, I don't think you should over-decorate the bathroom. It's not the area to be glamorized. Just keep it very simple. Hanging up cartoons is enough.

5. It's okay either way, but putting a corner plant next to the entrance will be better. Besides symbolizing career growth, it will also help absorb some negative energy that might enter the house.

6. Anything that symbolizes wisdom is good for this area of the house. Since it's a kitchen, you probably don't want to keep books in there, but maybe you can decorate the room with little objects that have short intellectual quotes or words of wisdom printed on them. Pictures of mountains, from the feng shui perspective, also symbolize wisdom and enlightenment.

7. There're many things you can put on your bookcase to enhance your wealth luck. Here are some ideas: fish fugurine, laughing buddha, fortune frog figurine, i-ching coins, or any objects made from metal.

Reiko 3 months ago

Hi Om,

I tried posting a question here the other day, but I think my internet was being non-cooperative again, and so I thought it posted, but it actually did not...but anyway :)

Just moved in a 2 bedroom condo unit that I am sharing with my sister. I'm trying to start anew, and get my life straightened out and find my direction, so I wouldn't want to take any chances and if I can help it, I want to incorporate Feng Shui in my new place to bring positive energy. I hope you can advice me with my concerns.

First, let me describe the layout of my bedroom:

When you enter the bedroom, right across is the bathroom door. It is not directly in line with the entrance door, but it is slightly off center to the right of entrance. To the left of the door is a two door closet, and a 1 door closet right beside it. This closet is built in on the wall to the left of the door (right wall when coming out from bathroom).

When you take a right from the main door, you would be in the main area of the bedroom. On the far right from the main door is the window. When facing this window, the door to the balcony would be to the left. This balcony door faces the right wall of the bathroom (viewed in reference to main door).

When my bed was set up, it was originally on the wall sharing the main door, feet facing West (I only know it is West because that's where I see the sun setting towards the sea...so this is approximate), while the desk that I have was facing the bathroom wall.

Yesterday, I moved my bed on the Western wall, so I am facing the Eastern wall of my room (shared by the Entrance to my room). I sleep on the left side of bed (my mattress is a full-sized mattress, because my parents plan to sleep in my room here whenever they come over :P ). There is a partial beam/lower cieling above the right side of my current bed position. To my left is my desk. The desk is in between my bed and the door to the balcony. I have a good view of the main entrance from my bed, and I can see my desk and the door to the balcony with my peripheral vision. The window can be seen too.

In front of my desk (left side of my bed), there is still some place where I can sit on the ground, and I can probably still put a chest of drawers either across from the desk on the western wall, or by the window.

There is only really two areas where I can place the bed, either the wall sharing the entrance to main door, or the wall across it, which is in between the bathroom wall and the door to the balcony. What would be a better spot?

Although it feels like I am in a command position from this side, my room seems more spacious when my bed is placed on the wall sharing the main door, because there is that pathway to the bathroom and the closet. Please advice me on where to position my bed (do I still have the option to maybe just place the bed to share the main door wall?), and where is the best area to put the desk, as I cannot place it anywhere else in the apartment. Also, what do I do with the bathroom that is across my bedroom's main door?

Sorry if this post is too long! I think I will just make another post to describe the layout of the whole apartment after this to make it easier to read.

I would appreciate your advice!

Hi Om,

Greetings.

I must admit that I'm quite impressed by your prompt responses and eagerness to help, as your replies from above suggest so! Anyways, I'm a new user and would appreciate if you could help me out with this: We have an ancestral home where live( though me and my brother stay out of town for work-related reasons), the bedroom of my parents has five doors, out of which three are entrances, one opens to my room, and one in the drawing room. The drawing room opening is the north-east. Now the concern is that, out of those three entrances, they sealed one for AC, and then the middle one for a closet. The only entrance left is the corner one, and that portion has the sink and taps from where water is filled for drinking. This upsets me a bit, since, I had heard that it's not advisable to have taps and sinks near entrance..Could you please help me with this ???

Thanks in advance.

@Sofia - It sounds like the position of your bed doesn't allow you to see the entrance of the room very well. (Being able to see the entrance symbolizes having a clear perception and perfect command of your life.) You might want to move the bed farther to the relationship, children or mentor areas. But if that's not practical, you can just keep the bed where it is.

@akshat jain - Yes, a lot of feng shui practitioners believe that it's inauspicious to have a sink opposite or too close to the bedroom door. This problem is easy to fix, though. You can just always keep the door closed when you don't need to use it, or hang a curtain over the door.

Good evening,

I'd very much appreciate some advice on a rather odd feature of our basement suite. It's basically one of four units in a four-plex that was originally designed as a duplex.

When you enter our apartment there is a tiny landing space with stairs that go up, slightly to the left, and stairs that go directly down, into our home. The upstairs stairway is much longer and the door at the top is sealed up (not just locked). I really have no idea what would be recommended to improve that area. My former spouse saw it and called it the "stairway to nowhere". Not overly inspiring!:)

Lastly, our small apartment is pretty much a rectangular shape. Turn right from the entrance it's kitchen and living area in one place. Middle, directly across from the front door, is a super-small bathroom. Very end of hallway, small bedroom. Left of hallway (end), large bedroom. And that's the whole thing:)

Would you be so kind as to suggest something for the weird stair situation? Thank you.

Thanks Much Om ! I appreciate it.

One more thing, this Diwali some body gifted us a crystal tortoise... Is it okay ? and which direction should I put that in ?

Also, we are renovating our bathroom and as per your previous posts, I understand that wood element will balance the water element; so In case we want to have pink or creamy tiles on the bathroom walls, will it be fine to hang a picture of forests or something to suffice for that ?

Thanks again !!!

Hi Om

Thanks for the awesome advice! I've looked thru all the questions to be sure I'm not duplicating before asking. I'm finding it overwhelming to Feng Shui my apartment so I'm just going to start with one room. My entrance is in the knowledge area and is also the kitchen so no room for bookshelves and reading lamps as I would like. The good news is that it's painted yellow with white cupboards. The bad news is that the sink is opposite the stove (no room to put anything in between to block). Are you able to make suggestions for this knowlegde area? Thank you.

Oops, I also wanted to mention that there are no windows in my kitchen - just the door so there's no natural light unless it's warm enough to leave the door open (summertime only)

hello Om,

thank you for many wonderful tips on feng shui and also your generosity in sharing and helping so many people. i hope you can help me too. i'm single, own a home-based cake business and in a relationship. i'm female and have kua number 3.

i hope to improve especially my wealth and love relationship aspects.

i'm sharing a master bedroom with my aunt. i know the room i'm staying in has bad feng shui. it is painted in light purple (lavender)and day lighting is not that good. based on your chart above, here is my room's layout:

1) bedroom door is in the middle of the room, at the career section

2) toilet is at the mentor section with door facing the children section

3)dressing table with mirror and a bookshelf is at the children section

4) writing table is at the relationship section

5) balcony door is at the fame section and is directly facing the bedroom door

6)my queen size bed is at the wealth section, with headboard against the left wall

7) a 4-door closet is sharing the family and knowledge section

8) my aunt's bed is at the knowledge section next to the door

9) lastly, there are two sets of windows in this room, one set on the left side of the balcony door (wealth sector) and the other set on the right side of the balcony door (relationship sector)

i cannot move to other rooms because it's all occupied and this is the only place i can live in. please advise what's best to do Om as i'm really feeling demotivated and unhappy.

if you find it difficult to visualize, maybe you can allow me to email you?

thank you very much Om.

@runnerbud - Hi. I'm not sure how inauspicious the "stair to nowhere" is, but having a staircase facing the entrance directly is never ideal. You might want to hang a bagua mirror on the outside of your main entrance and accessorize the staircase with some potted plants, in order to slow down the chi that goes in and out of your entrance. Having the bathroom right across the main entrance is also not very auspicious. You might want to consider placing a small room divider or hanging a piece of decorative fabric somewhere between the front door and the bathroom.

@akshat - In feng shui, the tortoise symbolizes stability and longevity. If you want to enhance your wealth luck or gain stability in your career, place it in your office or dining room. If you want to use it to improve your health or stability in your relationship, the bedroom is where you should put it. And yes, hanging a picture of trees or forests in the bathroom is a good idea.

@Sharon - Put a green rug on the floor between the stove and the sink. The color green represents the wood element, which helps balance the fire (stove) and the water (sink) elements. It's okay that your kitchen doesn't have a window. You said the walls are yellow, and the cupboards are white, right? These colors should make the room appear pretty light and airy rather than gloomy and stuffy.

@Adrienne - The alignment of your bedroom door and balcony door can cause chi to rush in and out too quickly, leaving no energy inside the room. If possible, hang a heavy curtain over your balcony door or place a piece of furniture between the two doors to redirect the flow of chi. Also, objects and colors that represent the wood and earth elements might be good for you. They promote motivation, creativity and the sense of stability, without generating too much yang energy that could overwhelm you. Good luck.

Hi, I happened upon this article and I thought it was great...I have always been interested in Feng Shui but until now have never really known how to apply it. I have a few questions for you that I'm hoping you can answer. I live in an apt building...the building itself is rectangular in shape and my apt is toward the back on the 2nd floor - it faces the outside parking lot and looks out toward another building. My apt is a 1 bedroom and is like an "I" shape (my living room/dining room separated by a hall where the bathroom is and then my bedroom). As soon as I walk in, the 'dining room area' is to my left, my kitchen to the right. Walking further in, I have my living room on the left. It shares the space with the dining. Its an open floor plan. But then to the right is a small hallway where the bathroom is and leads you toward the bedroom. My bed is toward the wall near the door but my feet dont face the door as I sleep they face another wall. In any case, I'm unsure how to apply some of the features on here to my apt. And, what do you do if you want someone in your life that is not a 'couple' with you...do you still put pictures of them in your bedroom? Can I photoshop the two of us together? I dont have pictures of me with this person. What I'm really looking for is to overhaul my relationship/love/fame/wealth sections. I feel that I am severely stagnant in all of them. I have (if i can find it) a pink crystal bonsai that when I purchased many years ago and was sold to me as feng shui for love...hope you can give me some tips! And thank you for the great article and responding back to everyone's comments!

@lisa - Yes, feng shui practitioners believe that uneven flooring can disrupt the smooth flow of chi and create instability in your life. To fix this, you should decorate the two adjacent areas with any objects that symbolize stability, such as turtle figurines, earthenware and large potten plants. Plus, try to accessorize the two areas with furniture and items of similar colors. If you hang pictures on the walls, they should also be of similar sizes.

@sirenadolphin - You can apply the map to each room instead of the whole apartment. That would make it much more simple to feng shui an irregular floorplan. The crystal bonsai has a wonderful symbolic meaning. It's believed to promote harmony and prosperity, so you can use it to enhance basically any areas of your life. I don't think photoshopping your loved one and yourself together is necessary. Just keep his pictures where you can easily see, and use them as a source of your inspiration. Also, since you feel that your life has been very stagnant, emphasizing the wood and water elements in the decoration of your home might be beneficial.

Is your bathroom located in the wealth area of the house? If so, try hanging a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door and place a potted plant (doesn't have to be a real one) or a green bathroom rug inside to counteract the strong water element of the bathroom.

Hello, thats a lot of helpful information I also read that its bad to have the stove facing the sink. I have a very small kitchen and the sink is not direckly in front of it but a little to the right of it- what can i do to minimaze negative energy? Also entry door of out apt is facing bedroom door and very big windows in the bedroom will placing a mirror on bedroom door help this equation?THank You.

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 2 months ago

@Suzeve - Both the color red and the fish symbolize wealth. :)

@adrienne - You're welcome. :)

@Maji - The stove represents the fire element whereas the sink represents the water, so they're combating each other. To balance these two conflicting elements, accessorize the room with some objects that represent the earth and wood elements, such as a green rug, potted plants, vase of flowers, pictures of mountains and forests, etc. As for the front door issue, you can place a potted plant near the door, hang a piece of fabric or bead curtain, or put a piece of furniture somewhere between the front door and bedroom door, so that it would slow down the chi and prevent it from rushing into the bedroom and out the windows. Don't put a mirror on the outside of the bedroom because it would just reflect all the chi away.

Hi Om!

Your FS advice is beyond amazing!! I live in a studio apartment... As u enter my apartment door, directly to the left, is my coat closet with the accordian style doors, to the direct right is my bathroom... Walking in further to my right again, is another oversized closet with the accordian style doors... Inside there is my king sz dresser to my bedroom set (i use to live in a large 2br apartment so thats y I have the king sz furniture), so my dresser is totally invisible... To the left of that over sized closet is my kitchen which is a breakfast bar... I have a stool in there to sit to it to eat, since I don't use my dinning room set to eat on at all... Out side of my kitchen is my dinning room... I have windows that are from the floor to the ceiling as these are luxury apartments and have blinds to them as well... In the far right corner (around the slight corner from the closet where my dresser is hidden) is my bed, and walkin closet... My bed is against the wall, so when u enter my apartment u can only see the foot of my bed showing... My apartment is well lit since I have the wall to wall windows...

I am extremely ANAL and I have severe OCD therefore I keep everything organized and clean... I am in need of your advice b/c I want to decorate my apartment... I hope u can visualize the areas that I have described... The entire layout I've given u is based on me walking straight in from my front door...

My fiance' and I don't live together yet, (he lives 5 minutes away), but I want to enhance my apartment and make it cozy for the both of us as I've already done for his place for when we are over there...

Thank u in advance!!

I want to ask you the question:which the room doen't has a door and a window?

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 2 months ago

@Trina - Your place actually sounds very nice, and everything seems to be in a good spot. One problem is that it sounds like you have a lot of closets. Small one, oversized one and then a walk-in closet, right? That's a lot for a studio apartment, and storage spaces tend to make chi become stagnant. Crystals can help spread the chi around. A small aquarium or table-top waterfall will also add movement of energy to the apartment. And light or bright colors would be better for your apartment than dark ones. Also, is your bed located in a cramped corner? Ideally, you should be able to see the door from your bed. But if you can't move it, that's fine. Keep it there but make sure there's plenty of space around the bed.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 2 months ago

@kiran - Since it's in front of the apartment, it shouldn't affect your individual unit, which is in the north side of the building. It could weaken the energy that's entering the building a little, but that's not something to really worry about.

@Mayy - mushroom

What type of crystals will I need and abt how many do u recommend?

Hi, Trina. Since your bed is in a spacious corner, I think it is okay to keep it there. You don't need a lot of crystals; maybe just one is enough. Put it somewhere near one of the closets where stagnant chi tends to accumulate. A clear quartz crsytal is probably the best. It promotes clarity, health, wisdom and positive thoughts. Rose quartz promotes love and kindness. And green fluorite is supposed to bring harmony and understanding. Hope you have fun decorating your home. :)

Hi, Theodora. The purpose of putting a potted plant in the bathroom is to counteract the strong water element of the room with the wood and earth elements. So the plant container should be made of clay or ceramic, and has an earth-tone color. Any types of leafy green plants are good. If you're not sure whether a live plant will survive in the bathroom, you may opt for an artificial plant instead.

* so next to my living area also right side is my bedroom & at the back of that is the toilet the door is outside near the laundry as i mentioned. I have small toilet & I have a frame of great wall of china in green color, is this ok?

*back to my bedroom i dont have enough space so other side of my bed lean to the wall at the back of my head board position, top of it in upper right sdide is my aircon and I dont have window in my bedroom :( also my mirror beside my bed is this ok?

@Heaven - Everything sounds fine the way it is. My only suggestion is that you should consider all the elements of the bedroom before hanging up a wind chime. If your bedroom is in a dark corner full of stagnant chi, which makes you feel depressed or listless all the time, then hanging a wind chime near the door or in the middle of the room can be helpful. But if the bedroom is already properly arranged and has a good amount of chi coming in and out, adding a wind chime might lead to too much energy and restlessness.

Hi Om, i am looking at renting a bedroom. But my options in the apartment unit just has some fengshui issues. Which one would be better to stay in? Room A - Has a window that has sunlight but the entrance bedroom door is door to door facing the bathroom door. Room B - Has a window at has no direct sunlight as it overlooks the laundry machine area but the door is not facing the toilet.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 7 weeks ago

I think room B would be easier to feng shui than room A. If you choose room A, it would be hard to avoid the overwhelming water element of the bathroom. It sounds like you have to share the bathroom with other people so it might not be convenient for you to keep the toilet seat and door closed all the time, or redecorate the bathroom to lessen its strong water element. Although room B may not get a lot of sunlight, you can make the room look brighter and more airy in some ways, such as using light colors to decorate the room or adding artificial lights to it.

Dear Om,

Thank you for this hub. I have some questions about using the aspirations of the bagua diagram / pa kua chart.

First, you say that the wealth section is as far to the left of the entrance as possible, but in the diagram the wealth section appears to the back of the apartment (opposite the entrance, rather than to its left. Could you clarify?

My apartment is a rectangle and the front door is in the center. My confusion is that in your diagram the front door (or Entrance) is on the left front of the triangle. Since my door is in the center of the wall, does that mean

- the entrance is into the Career section

- Knowledge is to the left of the entrance

- Mentors is to the right of the entrance

- etc?

Many thanks!

dia17 3 weeks ago

THanks Om for your reply. I am confused on the NW - is the wealth area the far left of the house or NW? Our entrance is to the East, so far left would be the SW corner.

Ah, I see. For some reason, when you said "NW", I just assumed you meant the far left corner. My apology. So if you want to feng shui your place according to this "aspirations of the bagua" chart, just start at the main entrance and separate the areas of the apartment into sections like on the chart above. If the bathrooms or laundry room happen to be in the wealth and career sections, that is very inauspicious. This is a basic feng shui strategy, by the way. There's also a more complicated type of feng shui, which requires you to calculate your personal gua number from your birthdate in order to figure out what your auspicious and inauspicious directions are.

Hi Om, learned a lot here, thanks! My husband and I are moving to a very small studio with the front door directly facing the main gate of the compound. Is this ok? The studio is rectangular with the bathroom on the front right side. There is no kitchen but we are planning to place the fridge, stove and counter to the left side of the front door as soon as you walk in -will this be a problem? Next to that is a window to the left middle side and we are planning to place a small dining table there. Towards the wealth section will be our closet and tv area. Our bed will be placed in the relationship area but it fills the entire area and no space around it. Both of us have been in stagnant careers these past few years but we are hopeful that this move will be good for us this time. We're moving this Friday and I would greatly appreciate your advice. Thanks in advance! :)

Jill 3 weeks ago

Hi Om!

I learned a lot from you! Thanks so much for your generosity. I also need your suggestions.

I'm moving to a small studio apartment. It's pretty much empty so I want to start right before I bring in furniture. I can't seem to apply the pa kua diagram because my entrance is on the right (compared to the diagram's entrance on the left)

1. When you enter the room and slightly turn to the left,  there's an irregular shaped corner - it's where the kitchen is.

2. Far left is the bathroom door. (same spot as your pa kua diagram's entrance)

3. Across the other side of the room is a wall with sliding glass doors. It's the first thing you see when you enter the room. Sunlight enters the room through this glass door during late afternoons.

4. Walls on the sides are solid walls.

I want to bring in a bed, a small dining table,  a small couch, a cabinet & long low table ( for my TV & sound system). Generally, where should I position these furniture? My only considerations are:

   A. Feng shui :) and

   B. I can face the glass doors (so I can enjoy the view) while am on the dining table and/or couch.

Thanks so much in advance, Om!:)

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 weeks ago

@Raquel - Hi. Everything sounds good. It's not ideal that your bed fills up the whole relationship area, but since it's a small studio apartment, I understand the limitation of furniture arrangement. Also, I suggest you place a live plant or hang a crystal in your career section. A small aquarium or tabletop fountain would be even better. These objects are supposed to eliminate stagnant chi and improve your career luck.

Om Paramapoonya profile image

Om Paramapoonya Hub Author 3 weeks ago

@Jill - Actually, you can still use this same diagram even though your entrance is on the right. So I would suggest you place the bed in the far left corner (wealth area). The couch can be placed in the relationship area and positioned to face the wealth area, or in the children section facing the family area. The dining table can be in the "good luck center." And the cabinet can be either in the family or knowledge area. This way, you can look through the glass door from your couch and dining table even though they don't directly face it.

@Asfo - You can choose either way. I think this "aspirations of the bagua" diagram makes it easier for you if you live with other people whose kua numbers are different from yours. Sometimes it could be difficult to arrange furniture and things according to each person's kua number. It's not ideal to have a big mirror in the bedroom. If you want to keep it there, try to place it where it won't directly face the bed.

Loreta, you should count the dining room as a part of your living room. As for the small space in the wealth area, you don't need to place anything big there. Hanging a little crystal from the ceiling or hanging a small photo/painting of fish on the wall can be quite auspicious for the wealth area. My other suggestion is that you should have a piece of furniture, a room divider or bead curtain between your two entrances so that the chi that comes in won't go right out.

@Sindy - In this case, it would be easier to apply the map to each room instead of the whole house. This way there will be no missing corners. My other suggestion is that you might want to place a bushy plant or hang a windchime somewhere between the front door and staircase, so the chi that comes in won't rush upstairs too quickly and will spread around the lower floor a little more.

Om, i am looking at apartment on right on river with waterfall rapids to the left. The land slopes down to the river. It is an old mill complex that is being refurbished for apartments so some of the buildings are still with no windows or boarded up windows with some industrial pipes and stuff lying around. This 2nd floor apartment door faces the stairs that do downstairs. It is the end unit-1100 sq ft. Entrance to building is on back side. All windows overlook the river. Worried about the waterfall/rapids right to the left of apartment, the placement of the main building door and the bare brick mill buildings with no windows on my right. Please help me.

Having a river near the house is usually considered to be very auspicious but the waterfall rapids could be a problem. It depends on the direction of the rapids' current. If it flows toward the house, then it's good. But if it flows away from the house, feng shui practitioners believe your luck might be drained away, too. The entrance that directly faces the staircase is also not very auspicious; there might be too much chi rushing in and out. As for the nearby buildings with no windows, there's no need to worry about them. They shouldn't affect the feng shui of the main apartment building.

om 3 days ago

the river flows towards and then down away, it is a curvy shape with rapids to the left and then slow flow to the right. So it flows from the left of the building to the right. Because I am on 4th floor, I can see quite a lot on the right as the rivers slows down. The waterfall rapids however in 8-10 layers as they fall.

I took your advice and another apartment right in middle on 4th floor with no stairs facing it like the end apartment. Please let me. May I pass your blog and name along to others? You are outstanding...

Hi, just need your advice, Im planning to move for a new flat to rent but its beside cementery and along the hi-way? The building built is not facing the hi-way, then at the back of it is the cementery, I really like the unit its very nice like a condo style, but suddenly i was thinking the effect of negative vibes coz its beside cementery. Pls help me to decide. Thanks in advance
