How to Make Lemony Apple Jam - Step by Step with Pictures
The taste and aroma of homemade apple jam is so luxurious that it sometimes makes me feel like I'm being kissed on the tongue by the Apple Goddess. The smell of apples being simmered on the stove is more comforting than any scented candles. Spread a spoonful of apple jam on a warm slice of toast, and you can savor bite after bite of simple joy. Use it to glaze mini apple tarts, and your party guests might ask for your secret recipe. Put it into a cutesy little jar, and you'll have a wonderful present to offer to a dear friend. Today the Apple Goddess is in a whimsical mood. She has inspired me to experiment with some tart green apples instead of sweet red ones. Unlike the typical version, my homemade apple jam will be very lemony and boldly flavored. If normal apple jam is like a French kiss, mine is probably a French kiss with a bite.
Equipment for Making Apple Jam
- heavy-duty saucepan, not too deep or shallow
- wooden spoon or ladle with a long handle
- grater
- potato masher
- mason jar - You should sanitize the jar by cleaning it in a dishwasher (possibly along with your other utensils) and leaving it on "heat drying" until the jam is ready. If you don't have a dishwasher, sanitize the jar by putting it in boiling water for about 10 minutes right before putting the jam in it. As for the lid, put it in a bowl of hot water instead of boiling water, because the boiling temperature might ruin the seal.
- jar lifter (if you put the jar in boiling water)
- long tongs for lifting the hot lid
Ingredients for Homemade Apple Jam (for 1 small jar)
- 3 unpeeled tart green apples (cored and cut into small pieces)
- 1 1/2 cup 100% apple juice from concentrate
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp. grated lemon zest
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- dash of ground nutmeg and ground cloves
How to Make Apple Jam
Put apples and apple juice into a saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat. Turn it down to low heat and let simmer until the apples are very soft.
Gently mash the apples with a potato masher. Add sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest and the other spices, then continue to cook until the consistency is thick. Stir constantly with a wooden ladle so that the bottom won't get burned. Put the jam into a warm sanitized jar. This homemade apple jam can last up to 3 weeks if kept in a refrigerator.

Thanks! I also like to make fruit jellies sometimes, but I prefer making jams. There's just a little more leeway in consistency. Glad you like this recipe. :)
Looks good and yummy. I prefer tangy jams, preserves and jellies than the sweet ones. I am sure I will like this.
It looks delicious and pretty easy. Thanks for including the illustrations!
Wow... this was a delicious recipe of jam. Great combination between lemon and apple. I really enjoy all steps bu step in making this jam. Good for breakfast, I thought. Thanks for share with us. Rated up as always!

You forgot to mention homemade apple pie! I use Granny Smith apples...they may be the tart green apples you're talking about. Yummy!
I have made preserves and several types of jams, but never apple and it looks delicious. I've kept this recipe. T

@SusieQ - No, they're not Granny Smith. I bought them from my local Asian store. I think they might be green Gala apples imported from China. Granny Smith apples will work just fine, though. :)
@Pamela - Thanks for dropping by, Pamela. Glad you like my apple jam recipe. :)

Oh man - as usual - your pictures just slay me~ I need someone to show me how to do that kinda stuff. I read and read about it, even watch tutorials - how can one old lady be so dense? Fantastic hub by the way - pictures aside....love apples and love lemon - a great combo!
P.S. Thanks for voting for me, too - it seems like there is another round to this contest so may be calling on you again - now it is the tug-of-war part between the 2 top hubs. That's kinda weird but oh well! I think you can vote between Friday night (tonight) and Monday noon). If you're so inclined~
Dear my "old" lady, you just have to open a new background layer on Photoshop, then arrange your pics on it. That's all. You will get my vote pretty pretty pretty soon! =D
Love your presentation and the apple jam looks delectable. Mmmm...I want some on my toast. Rated up.
Thanks! I'm actually gonna make some more jam this week. Not sure what kind, though. Depends what I find at the farmers market today. hehe :)
