Squat Toilet For Your Wellness

By Om Paramapoonya

Sitting on a toilet, which you probably think is a natural way to do bathroom business, is actually very unnatural and dangerous for your health. It can cause constipation, inflammatory bowel diseases, colon cancer and even difficult childbirth delivery. The squatting position which may seem uncomfortable and rather too primitive, on the other hand, is an easy and proper way to your wellness. Here are some reasons why:

"Constipation Time" Music Video

1. When seated, your anal canal is unstraightened and accordingly "choked"!

Have you ever felt that you still have something left inside your bowel after you just leave the bathroom? That is because sitting is not the right posture to do bathroom business at all. The sitting position bends the final pathway between the rectum and anus, hence it obstructs waste from being evacuated easily. Moreover, unlike squatting, sitting creates no pressure that you need in your abdominal cavity. (The pressure I am talking about here is beneficial pressure which compresses the colon and creates a natural urge to evacuate.) As a result, in frustration, you need to strain while holding your breath in order to push downwards. Yet even so, you still get constipated, and your colon is not as empty and clean as it should be.

Squatting, on the other hand, helps you relax your puborectalis muscle and straightens your rectum. The pressure from your thighs while squatting also facilitates expulsion of waste. Most constipation sufferers notice significant comfort improvement within seven days after switching their potty position from sitting to squatting. Hemorrhoids also heal quickly, as the squatting posture is adopted for bowel movements.

2. The sitting posture allows some leakage of waste to enter into your small intestine

In the squatting position, your right thigh - pressing on the right side of your abdomen - squeezes the pouch-like cecum and forces liquid waste upwards into the ascending colon and away from the small intestine. In the sitting position, however, there is no squeezing action that directs waste upwards. Therefore, some leakage of waste can easily enter into your small intestine and contaminate it, which causes your liver to work much harder than it is naturally supposed to in order to detox the whole bowel system. And most of the time, your liver usually fails to clean up the system completely. Fecal toxins, so to speak, will remain in your body as long as you do not develop healthier bathroom habits.

This probably explains why colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, whereas in Asian and African countries where squat toilets are more widely used, colon cancer has never been considered a major threat to public health.

Unassisted Waterbirth

3. Sitting toilets weaken women's ability to have a quick and easy childbirth delivery

As women are so used to sitting toilets, their muscles 'down there' usually lose the strength and flexibility that they need in order to have an easy childbirth delivery. Before hospitalized births, women in the old days had always given birth using the squatting position, which is supposed to be the most natural and comfortable way to deliver a baby. When a mother-to-be lies on her back with her feet held up by stirrups, she is actually required to push harder, and the labor could be much longer. It is like pushing her baby uphills against gravity. On her back, she cannot move much or exercise a lot of control over the birth of her baby. The pressure of the baby's head on her back and tailbone can be very painful, and the size of her birth canal can be reduced by up to 30%.

That's why more and more women nowadays choose to have a waterbirth instead of lying helpless on a hospital bed and enduring hour after hour of painful labor. Being in the water, they are able to squat comfortably despite their poorly developed sqautting muscles. Most of them went through the whole procedure without using any drugs at all, and of course that is fantastic for the long term development of their children.

Im an asian and use squat posn and let me tell you its great after you are done. It feels very light and one does not feel any left over feelings. There are almost negligible cases of colon cancer in my country and its all coz of aquat toilets and off course very less cases of constipation. Try it and you will really feel benifitted as naturally its not the position of passing stool. you sit and feel immense pressure which helps you expell all the feaces in one go. Good research.Thumbs up

I heard the squat position in a Yoga class to relieve constipation, which can be accomplished by putting a stool - about the height of the toilet - in front of the toilet. While you will still be sitting on the toilet it has the same effect as squatting. It works.

This is totally true! Even when I have trouble um.. gettin' #2 out, if i squat on the toilet, it comes out much more easily.

Good article. I really miss squat toilets. But I regularly squat outside the toilet, and it gives me an urge to compeltely evacuate my bowels. Love my squatting position. I do it several times a day.

This is 100 % true to our knowledge as in Hinduism, these things are discussed in details but its sad that indian people just ignoring them and running behind western culture.

One can follow the living style as described by Hinduism and gain benefit
